Nope. I have a friend who applied for and received a patent when he was an undergraduate. It was something along the lines of an artificial pancreas. Never was commercialized so he didn't make any money off it.

I registered a couple of my written works when I first started writing in the '80s.
Actually, when you author something it is copyrighted - registration just clears up any claims as to who holds that copyright.
