What were you like at 14?

I'm having another difference of opinions with somebody regarding the show Roseanne...now there seems to be an unofficial I-Hate-Becky-Conner club, whole bunch of people who agree if they'd acted like she did when they were a teenager, they would've been a whole list of things that are illegal to commit, or if she were their kid, they would do said things to her.

Now, there's this one person, I guess a woman, and she has me pegged for a 12 year old otherwise I would understand that ALL teenagers, especially ALL 14 year old girls, think the world revolves around them, and they will die or the world will end if they don't get everything they want.

Here's my newsflash: I WAS a teenager, I WAS a 14 year old girl, but for 1 thing, I never wore dresses at 14, I hated them, I hated anything remotely feminine, I would NEVER expect my parents to buy me an $80 anything, letalone a wear-one-time-only dress for a dance 'or else none of the boys will dance with me', because boys really care about dresses, right? But I digress, any mindset I had of I just HAD to have something or else, was very short lived and died out when I was about 7 because I had parents who did not take crap from their kids, made it clear the kids were NOT in charge, and also made it clear that whining and having baby tantrum fits were NOT allowed. The response to that is that most teenagers ARE like that, and not like how we were raised. Well, how about everyone here? How would you describe yourselves at 14? Or if you're a parent, how about your own kids?

I think I was in 7th grade then, don't recall much of anything special happening in my life at that time.

Eh, I was me.

Well, I was like you at 14. I did not expect to get, get, get. Nor did I get, get, get.

My son "gets" much, much more than I ever did, and even he gets much, much less than his peers.

My advice: stop arguing this with parents who think teens are like this. They are parents giving into every teen whim and you won't win the argument because they "need" to be right or they will feel bad about themselves.

I was in my own world at 14, nose in a book, destined to become the geek scientist I am today.

Normal teen girls, I'd have to say, judging by my daughter (soon to be 17) and her friends, live in the moment, have no concept of time or money, say what immediately comes to mind without forethought, and can't stand being in public with their parents.

In a lot of ways similar to the way I am now. Just a little more green. Eager and easily persuaded on one hand, but cautious and mindful on the other.

Yeah, when we would walk to the local mall in Miami on Friday nights for our Pizza outing, our daughter would lag half a block behind us.

That is until Brenda and I one evening RAN SHOUTING BACK TO HER and gave her a big hug right on Biscayne Boulevard in front of everyone.

Luckily none of her friends saw this or I'm sure she would have died of embarrassment.

About to enter high school, and curious about many things.

I got deflowered at 14. I was a regular kid though.
