    Question Testing for a diploma

Post by Chris Sun Jul 15, 2012 1:03 pm

Do you think high school seniors, in addition to earning their course credits, should have to undergo one last major exam that they have to pass in order to qualify for a diploma?

Didn't/don't they do that in NY? The Regents exams?

Nah....that's too extreme. Some people are just bad at tests, and considering how significant THAT test would be....nah....it would severely cut into the number of graduates. If you earned all your course credits, then that should be enough.

I don't think so. What would be the purpose? If you completed all your credits, you earned your diploma. Odds are, to get all your credits, you'd have had to take quite a few major exams already. Plus, if the graduation rate started dropping, the political suits would get upset. lol Wink If we got stupid people getting diplomas, then we need to improve course quality, not add more useless exams.

No. We had this in the state where I live. It was called the state "competency test". If you didn't pass it, no diploma for you. I had to take it. Passed but it really is unfair in my opinion.

When I was in school, passing the Regents was optional. Now it's mandatory. I actually don't mind the fact that kids have to pass the Regents to get a diploma, because you have four years to pass and the tests are given out more than once a year. It's a test that's given throughout your high school years and it shows how much you're learning....kinda like standardized testing. I passed all my Regents in the 10th grade. I think most states administer a "competency" exam of sorts to qualify for a diploma. My understanding of the question is that should students have to a take a big final exam after that in order to get a diploma.

I heard Romney wants to institute a policy like this and I think it's a terrible idea. When I was a HS senior we have a standardize test that we took that added an additional endorsement to our diploma's that looked better for college apps, but it wasn't mandatory that pass the test or even take it.

Heard it where? I'd like to look up the quote. Smile I heard Obama wants to take away summer vacation and make school days longer. lol So much we've all heard. I think it's best if government just stays out of education. The more they try to micromanage it, the worse it gets.
