I plan to see Sparkle today - Whitney Houston's final movie role.

Next on this weekend list is Expendables 2, which predictably got bad reviews but why not a last Summer Action B-Movie with all those ageing action stars in it.

Then I might even pick up a PG movie Timothy Green

    Sparkle
    Movie Blurb by Shale
    August 17, 2012

I did not know too much about this movie, other than it was the last film role of Whitney Houston (whom I loved for her voice and presence for years) so it seemed a fitting tribute to go see it.

I thot somehow the lead character Sparkle Williams was created with a similar name of its actor Jordin Sparks, but this movie is a remake from a 1976 version with the same character, so that is coincidence only.

It opens in 1968 with Sister (Carmen Ejogo) the more flamboyant and worldly older sister to Sparkle and Dolores (Tika Sumpter) performing in a local club with the younger girls as backup. Sparkle writes the songs and Sister delivers them with visual and vocal sensuality (yeah, I was turned on).

The problem is they are living with their very proper and religious mother (Whitney Houston) who was once a singer but got out of the business and does not want her daughters to follow that path. The movie follows the progression of this family with its ups and downs in the music bizz and how the diminutive Sparkle eventually comes into her own.

I really enjoyed the singing and all the female performers are actually singers, who did the soundtrack album. Houston only did one solo in the movie, a gospel piece with choir accompaniment, but she and Sparks did the song "Celebrate" that played at the end credits. A little movie trivia I found out, this movie was going to be made years ago, with Aaliyah as Sparkle but got put off after her death in 2001.

Well, picked up my second movie of the weekend:

    The Expendables 2
    Movie Blurb by Shale
    August 18, 2012

I knew from the last Expendables that this was a B-grade action movie and the action started from the beginning, before the title came on screen. The crew was rescuing someone being tortured by terrorists in Nepal and no blood splatter was spared in the ensuing melee.

Just like the first movie, the cast is the most noteworthy part with all the ageing stars in one movie. This time Schwartzenegger (65) and Willis (57) did more than a cameo appearance, actually participating in the action. Not that everyone did equal time on-screen, such as Booker (Chuck Norris - 72) and Yin Yang (Jet Li). Liam Hemsworth at 22 was literally The Kid amongst all the grampas.

But, I go to these summer matinee action flicks for the absurd escapism and that is all this movie has. Lots of explosions, unbelievable shooting and fighting and flying sea planes into tunnels, taking out a helicopter with a motorcycle (No, Willis didn't do it) and corny lines and nods to all the other movies. Like, when a man gets totally riddled with machine gun fire, Stallone says "Rest in pieces," and The Arnold actually did say "I'll be back."

Oh, do we even need a story? CIA operative Church (Bruce Willis) calls in a debt from Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) and he is to go on a mission with another operative named Maggie (Nan Yu) to recover secrets that were lost in a plane crash. They recover the data but are met by an equally armed bunch of mercenaries led by Vilain (Jean-Claude Van Damme - 51) and his lieutenant Hector (Scott Adkins) The villains get away with the secrets and Maggie reveals that they are going after a Plutonium stash the Soviets had hidden after the cold war.

So the Expendables, Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), Gunner Jensen (Dolph Lundgren - 54), Hale Caesar (Terry Crews) and Toll Road (Randy Couture) go after them, or as the mission is explained by Ross "Track 'em, Find 'em, Kill 'em." This flick is rated R strictly for the blood splatters, riddled bodies and exploding heads - no sex of any kind. (There woulda been too many Viagra jokes to wade thru.)

I wanted to see Sparkle, but my friends didn't want to because they were afraid they were going to start crying in the theater. Give me a fucking break, I said. We wound up seeing The Bourne Legacy....which was decent. I'll go see Sparkle sometime this week.

I saw Sparkle on Saturday and I loved it I though they did a great staying somewhat true to the original, but making it contemporary. The cast did a really good job too. Mike Epps truly surprised me. He actually has range.

Okey dokey, I finally saw Sparkle. And I really liked it. I don't know why critics are panning it.....but prob. because their old white asses have never saw the original and don't know what to make of it.....but the movie was a true "remake". It paralleled the original, but didn't try to outright copy it and added a few extra elements to make it more contemporary. The only problem I have with that is is that the movie is set in the 60's and since R. Kelly did most of the music, the music to me didn't sound like something that would've came out in the 60's. But overall, I give it a B. And I loved Whitney's solo.

Yep. And I've noticed that a lot of comedians have that same range and can pull of dramatic roles, contrary to their typical style, better than regular actors. Chris Tucker did it in Dead Presidents, Eddie Murphy did it in Dreamgirls, Richard Pryor did it in Some Kind of Hero, Jamie Foxx did it in Ray and Ali (and countless others), Damon Wayans did it in Bamboozled. How ironic.

I loved Whitney's solo too, in fact my wussy butt got a bit choked up. Smile

I stated I had never seen the original, so I was somewhat shocked that Whitney's character was so negative, for lack of a better word. Previews I had seen prior didn't make it seem like her character was like that.

And I liked that song Jordin Sparks sang at the end, when the credits were rolling.

I think it's a lot harder to be funny than not so it doesn't surprise me to see comedians do well in dramas. Robin Williams and Whoopi Goldberg are two other examples. Speaking of irony, I can only think of one comedy that I liked Robin Williams in.

It's much more believable and makes much more sense to have a comedian come out and get the acting roles than some popular rapper or singer. And they usually do a hell of a better job.

New at the box office today: 8/17 Empty The Odd Life of Timothy Green

The Odd Life of Timothy Green
    Movie Blurb by Shale
    August 31, 2012

Today there were no new movies opening that appealed to me so I picked up this one of a couple weeks past with my free-movie ticket. I had watched the trailers and saw what this Disney PG rated movie was about and figured it would be pleasant and relaxing.

It follows a couple, Cindy (Jennifer Garner) and Jim Green (Joel Edgerton) who really want to have a kid but after much trying are resigned to being childless. To ease their pain they spend the evening over a bottle of wine, writing all the attributes of their perfect child on little note papers - good heart, positive attitude, total honesty, artistic ability, kicking the winning goal in a soccer game. They even name him Timothy and put all the papers into a wooden box and bury it in the garden.

That night they find a 10-year-old boy covered in mud who says his name is Timothy (CJ Adams) and calls them mom & dad. He is the perfect little boy, except for the leaves that are sprouting at his ankles.

I found the movie quite charming and not overly sappy as it takes us thru the parenting efforts of the Greens in dealing with the almost perfect child and how the rest of the family and community adjust to him.

A newly released study conducted by Home Depot, the nationwide home improvement retailer, has revealed a startling increase in gardening by pedophiles since last week's release of Disney's "The Odd Life of Timothy Green," the story of a childless couple who inadvertently grow a 10-year-old-boy in their backyard.

According to Home Depot's study, thousands of suspected pedophiles have streamed into the company's stores nationwide asking if they carried "Timothy Green" seeds.

New at the box office today: 8/17 Timothy-green-2

" 'The Odd Life of Timothy Green' is classic Disney wish fulfillment," convicted pedophile Jerry Sandusky told Hollywood & Swine. "If I could've grown kids in my own backyard, Penn State wouldn’t have had to forfeit 111 wins."

Walt Disney Studios, the company behind "The Odd Life of Timothy Green," admitted they were shocked to learn about pedophiles' favorable reaction to their movie, especially after the film’s tracking indicated pedophiles had no interest in seeing it. But several pedophiles admitted they lied to Disney's marketing research department about wanting to see the film, afraid the truth might violate their parole.

To capitalize on the new interest in gardening by pedophiles, Disney has announced plans to release a new line of "Timothy Green," merchandise. According to a spokesperson for Disney, the merchandise will include sprinklers, weed killer, gardening gloves and "Timothy Green" seeds.

"They’re really only sunflower seeds,” said a Disney spokesperson. "But these creepy perverts don’t seem to care, because they’re already waiting in line outside Home Depot to buy them."
