    And what kind of meat did you grow up eating?


    This was a discussion my parents had a few days ago. My mother has NEVER been a big meat eater but especially as a kid because whatever meat they DID have was so awful. Her mother hated to cook and as soon as TV dinners came out that's where they got most of their meat from, that and some kind of crappy hamburger pre-made patties that were full of gristle which were then promptly charred to a crisp in the traditional 50's fashion of overcooking.

    Now, as a child I was not a big meat eater either although the options were notably better: roast beef, fried chicken, hamburgers, turkey, etc., but as a child a lot of the food we did have left much to be desired so I didn't eat a lot in general either, though I do now.

    Yes, I loved meat as a kid because that was all I knew. Every meal was a meat and veggie meal. That must be what Dad insisted on because Mom never liked meat all that much.

    So, when I got on my own, I ate very little meat. I had a lot of pasta because I never really had much pasta. But now, I would much rather have meat with the meal, for dinner. Lunch, not so much.

    We had the traditional meat at every dinner, lunch meats for lunch bacon or sausage for breakfast. Meat was rationed, one pork chop, piece of meatloaf, couple pieces of chicken or whatever apiece so it wasn't like I ate whole hog.

    I never cooked much meat when I got out on my own, just bacon, sausage or the occasional steak or hamburger cooked in the skillet. I ate fast food hamburgers a lot.

    Then in 1970 I became a vegetarian.

    Whatever my mother served. We weren't so well off that steak, etc. was common but it's not like we had sandwiches for dinner. Not all the time anyway.

    We raised chickens and rabbits, so we had those fairly often. Other meats were always put into casseroles. I never tasted steak until I was 17.

    Yes I liked meat growing up, my Mama was an excellent cook she would make Roasts, Steaks, Lamb, Chops, Chicken but not every day. We did not eat meat on Wednesdays and Fridays. Being from an Italian family our meals were very versatile we at a lot of pasta too. I miss Mama's cooking sad

    Yes. My taste for cow, pig and chicken was just as acute then as it is today.
