| Won't Back Down Movie Blurb October 12, 2012
This movie came out on Sept 28th but I was in DC and missed it. Then it was bumped off the matinee schedule at both the local Cine's and I don't bike at night so I was just resigned to wait for the DVD in half a year. Then today I noticed it had one matinee showing, so it became the movie of the week for me. (I was also the only one in the theater at 1 p.m. and had a private screening)
The movie is about two women trying to put a fire under a lethargic, failing public school in Pittsburgh. The actual events that inspired it are from Los Angeles where a California 2010 "Parent Trigger" law allowed a majority of dissatisfied parents in an underperforming school to sign a petition to require the school to be drastically reformed, dismiss underperforming teachers and change it to a charter school.
Only about a third of aggregate reviewers on Rottentomatoes cared for the movie, mostly because despite its two leads was oversimplified with predictable clichéd characters. Some would even call it propaganda and it did put the teachers' union right up there with the bad teachers and uncaring, bureaucratic school board.
I am one of the 66 percent of audience that liked this movie despite its flaws. Sometimes knowing in black & white the good guys and bad guys makes for good entertainment, even tho you are aware that there are grey areas and that not all failing schools are going to improve by this method.
