Under the law, and I don't know if this is a state by state basis or if it's nation wide, but here, it is legal for teenagers with only a permit to drive to and from school and work by themselves, however, considering permits require at least 50 hours' of driving experience before the license test, would you trust your kid to drive by themselves in that position? I say hell no, if they don't have a license, they're going to have somebody who DOES in the passenger seat with them.

Would you let your teenager drive alone with just a permit?

Here when he drives legally it will be at 15.5 when he's got his temps. But he's been driving the big ass truck all summer. He drove me and the dog to the back 40 this summer after I found out he was already driving. He is one hell of a driver. I am not allowed to drive the work trucks but my son is. We are already shopping his first vehicle.

Our stste has some strict ass laws. When I started driving I think the earliest age for a learner's permit was 17. I don't recall how long I had to have that before I could go for my licence but until then I think I had to have a licenced adult driver in the car with me. Just after my daughter got her's they started with these graduated licences. This is what new (young) drivers have to go through now.
Special learners permit driving restrictions

Depends, if I knew from driving with them if they were going to be alright, and if it's just a quick trip to the store or something.

When I learned to drive in Missouri 1962, you needed a licensed driver with you. Also, my dad checked and I was covered under his insurance while learning to drive. Hence, I drove to the license place and got my drivers license and my dad drove home. I never drove on my license until I bot my own car in 1966.

I wasn't aware that anyone with just a learners permit could drive alone. I thought that they always had to have a licensed driver in the car with them, until they were finally granted one of their own. There's no way I would let a kid drive alone who only had a permit.

I never let my daughter go it alone until after she had her license and I was sure she'd be fine. She has a blind eye, and we really had to work with her on judging the car, surroundings, distance, etc., but she's fine now, being by herself.

I can understand that, one time when I was driving with my brother he asked why I changed lanes a block before we had to, the way that part of the street was set up it looked like the two blocks ran in one piece together and I commented about poor depth perception and I always had that problem when I learned to drive, because I always wanted to make sure I wouldn't hit the car beside me as I drove by but always had trouble gauging how far on the next lane I had to be so we were far enough apart but I was still on my side of the street.

HELLLLLL NOOO!!!
When I was 16, i got my permit from school after taking the written test there. We had driver's ed class in school our junior year. My mother only let me drive with her between 3am and 5am when no one was on the road.
As alan stated, NJ is strict. And i often thing young drivers are harassed. My nephew and his friends were 22, and got pulled over and searched just because they "looked young and up to no good". They went bowling together. real troublemakers!
