Chasing Mavericks
Movie Blurb
October 28, 2012
This is a surfing movie based on the life of California surfer Jay Moriarity who was famous in surfing circles for his feats at 16 years of age. Jay (Jonny Weston) learns to surf as a child and when he is a teen is drawn to his neighbor, Frosty Hesson (Gerard Butler) who is a Soul Surfer since forever and has surfed the rare maverick waves in Northern California that can be as high as a 5-story building.
Jay wants Frosty to show him how to surf mavericks, but Frosty will have nothing of it. His wife (Abigail Spencer) convinces him to mentor the boy, who is dealing with being abandoned by his father, a depressed mother (Elisabeth Shue) and the usual teen angst of relationships, bullies and his best friend getting into drugs.
Frosty becomes Jay's mentor and like Mr. Miyagi with the Karate Kid, sets Jay on training tasks that do not seem surfing related like writing essays on fear and observations. But every task given to Jay strengthens him to survive the maverick waves that are coming. Of course you know he has to triumph, otherwise there would be nothing to base this true story on.
This is a coming of age story and during this training both Frosty and Jay come to grips with things missing in their lives and develop a father/son relationship.
