Being Alone, does it scare you? Empty Being Alone, does it scare you?

Post by Tony Marino Wed Nov 07, 2012 4:33 pm

What I mean by this question its not a case of being alone in a room at night and being scared or walking down a street and not having someone there to protect you but more the idea of and I quote:

"you're born alone and you're damn sure going to die alone". Does that scare you?

I think everyone dies alone. It is an experience within yourself, even if you are being cradled in the arms of a loved one. Perhaps that cradling is comforting while conscious but as that consciousness leaves you are alone.

I was once very close to death. I was alone. What scared me more than being alone was that I felt my body shutting down completely.. and I was still conscious. I could not lift my muscles, my vision was extremely blurry, i even lost control of my bodily functions (gross i know, but that is how close to death i was). What scares me is that I dont know how long I will stay conscious when it finally does happen to me. I would rather lose consciousness immediately

I prefer alone. I always have. I was married for ten years and I was happiest when my ex had a traveling job and I had the whole house to myself. When I was a kid I had to share a bedroom with two sisters. I longed for a room of my own. I used to beg my mom to leave me home when the family went grocery shopping on Saturdays.

I was a weird kid. LOL!

My mom used to tell me when I was an infant I would never cry when I woke up from a nap or in the morning. She would sometimes hear me cooing to myself or even laughing so she knew I was awake but never crying as most babies do to let someone know I was awake and wanted attention or to be fed. I guess I knew it would come around eventually.

Once I was on my own after my divorce I tried living with a roommate and hated it. I discovered the only roommate I wanted was a cat or two. I have lived this way for almost 40 years. I would have saved a lot of money sharing expenses with a roommate but I would rather be poorer and happy by myself. And the cat of course.

So maybe I am a little odd. Or a lot odd. I do like people. I like to go out and have a good time. I enjoy chatting with them. I am not a total hermit. But at the end of the day. I am alone. Or not. I am with me and that makes me not alone. And the cat. Wink

I have lived alone most of my life except for the 20 years when I had partners. I am quite self-sufficient and like the freedom of not checking in, not making plans around someone else.

I had a friend who would invite me to Thanksgiving & Christmas dinners at his house because he could not countenance me being alone. I went and enjoyed the company but it was not a necessary respite. Since he moved I have been doing quite well alone on those holidays (Vegetarian Non-Christian - I'd do better at a Hari Krishna party).

BTW, I have a contact list in my desk drawer at work, with a key to my apartment. My boss knows if I do not show up or call in, one of my co-workers is to come check out why. If I quit the job I will probably make some other arrangement with my stepdaughter. Don't want to stink up the place too much.

I think more in terms of what Benny said in that episode of George Lopez when she wouldn't take his money to move into an apartment: "You live alone, you die alone, and that just doesn't sound like the party it used to."

Yes. But it's not something I generally dwell on.

I have never been truly alone, it doesn't scare me, but I am so lazy only the fear of filth would keep me from being an extreme hoarder! I also could see myself becoming a hermit. When my husband worked away from home 2 weeks away and 2 weeks at home, I didn't even bother to get dressed unless I was going for the mail. There was no reason to get dressed. At the end of the 2 away weeks I would do the dishes, make sure the drive way was shoveled (in winter)make the bed up fresh, and get the neighbors girls in to do the floors.

Yes, it's a scary thought, but hopefully I will have many more decades before I have to worry about it. The best way to die is in your sleep.

No, I fully think I will be alone when I die. And probably on a street corner since I have no clue how much retirement is going to cost me. I will probably fade out in my profession only to land myself on a Chicago street to beg for coins until I perish from the cold.

Somewhat. I don't want to be a spinster or old maid......but I do relish solitude. I guess I don't want to be alone when I don't want to be alone. At least when it would bother me.
