If your brother or sister needed a place to stay would you let them come live with you for free or would you make them pay something a month?

They'd have to contribute/pitch in. That includes Rent and groceries.

Temporarily I wouldn't charge any family member. If they fill out a change of address form at the post office, then we're going to work something out. I think they'd offer anyway. About 15 years ago when one of my wife's brothers was between wives and had to have surgery on both hips he stayed with us for a while while he recouped. I know I didn't ask him for any money.

I met my half sister once and she was a silly twit. So no thanks I wouldn't let her live with me if she was rich as god.

If it's an extended or an indefinite stay then they'll need to pony up some money every month. No one lives anywhere for free.

Depends on what kind of a bind they're in. If they're employed and could afford to pitch in financially, then I would find it pretty insulting if they didn't offer something.

I am going through that right now! My sister's house was destroyed by water from Sandy so she had no where to go but to my house. I am not charging her rent and she has contributed to some things. I am hoping that it will only be a few months until her house is back in shape again. I love my sister but its no fun having someone living with you full time when you are used to being alone most of the time.

I don't know about rent free, but so long as she contributed something, that would probably be enough to keep me satisfied. In situations like this, it isn't so much about the money as it is the gesture.

Only if he really couldn't afford it. I know he would pay me back somehow.

Yeah, that. My younger brother would contribute something, but I would let him live with me if he was desperate.
