Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away
Movie Blurb by Shale
December 22, 2012

I have never been to a Cirque du Soleil show when they came to South Florida and just like plays that I do not go to, I will see them when they become movies. Ppl who like plays and live performances will argue it is better but today I got what would be a ringside seat to the show, up close and more personal than seeing the performers live. They were bigger than life on the big screen and the 3-D let me see the depth of the performance.

There isn't much to tell about this movie. I am of the 82% of audiences who liked it, but only a little over half of the aggregate reviewers cared for it. Perhaps they were concerned with the non-acting, the non-existent story or the non-expressive face of the lead, Mia (Erica Linz). But, this to me is art on screen and I was fascinated by the sets, costuming and gymnast dancers.

During these various scenes we see great costuming and sets for the gymnastic/dance performances that always amaze me.

I am always turned on by the sight of a well sculpted human form. But in this movie you not only see the form but you see what the human body can do. How is it possible that I was issued the same body as these ppl but theirs moves so unbelievably agile and precisely. It is as if we are not of the same species.

You don't live performances as a rule? Pity. I've seen Richard Burton in Equus (he was a much bigger name than Anthony Hopkins at the time), Al Pacino in American Buffalo, Frank Langella as Dracula Yul Yul Brynner as The King and Ben Vereen in Jesus Christ Superstar. True, they can do things in a movie that they can't do on a stage but live performances are incomparable (to me anyway).

Nope, my thing is Cinema. It's the only reason I have seen Equus, Sweeney Todd, Phantom of the Opera and many other plays that ppl don't even realize were plays before making the big screen.

I will soon be seeing Les Miserables.

Well, in that case I would love to see some of those limber, athletic Cirque performers in a 'live performance.' Blue Cool

Wow. Everything I write is supposed to be a double entendre? Now I know a little bit how Groucho Marx felt.
