Making a new friend in adulthood

It's a strange thing to me.

I have a lot of good friends, but not too many are local and the ones that are mostly have younger kids.

A few weeks ago, I met this really cool woman who lives near me and works from home. We are very similar and really hit it off. So, today I texted her and asked her to go out next Friday for the trivia thing at a local bar. She said she would love to and it was so goofy of me because I felt like I was asking someone for a date.

I was actually a bit giddy she said yes. I just think we have so much in common and think we could be good pals. But now I feel silly about the whole thing.

Why? Go for it! There's no age limit on making friends. It's great to find someone you have something in common with & enjoy being around.

You're right. It just feels strange to me texting a new friend. I guess all my friendships have happened over time and so meeting someone one time then texting her left me feeling like a person worrying about if a boy would like her!

It's just funny how many parallels there are to our lives. We both work from home and are "dog people." I think we will really get along well. She should be fun for shopping and lunch dates.

i met a woman a year ago... we chat online all the time, and she invites me places all the time. i'm just not the "friend" kind of person. i usually get used, then hurt... so rather just hang with family. we have gone out on a couple of occasions, but i think she wants a closer relationship than what makes me comfortable.

go for it..have fun... learn some new things.

People come into your life at different times in your life, and sometimes just when you need them to. The best relationships happen when you aren't looking for one, or don't expect it, and that applies to all--not just romantic ones. I have a dear friend who I met 5 years ago online, and he and I chat by email a couple times each week, I have some other girlfriends I keep in touch with on Facebook, who I met in recent years, and I've recently become really good email/texting friends with the guy that wrote the song that my username came from. I've always believed that no matter what your age, people are put in your path for a reason, at different times.

That's so true, Hgirl. In that other thread, we were talking about IMDb trolls and the really awful one who was not only mean to me, but to others as well, prompted a couple other girls to start their own board. It never took off big time, but there were about six or seven of us. Well, last Sept., after "knowing" one of them for nearly 7 years, we met up in Chicago. She is so kick ass and really, an amazing friend. And I really do adore how our online friendship came about.

For years, we didn't use real names or give real details about our lives. Then after many years, we did the Facebook thing. Then, I was much more into meeting in person than she was. Once she was ready, we did and it was so cool.

I know I am getting wordy, but I don't think I talked about this here before (forgive me if I did). Anyway, when we met up, I had to basically hop in her car with her husband driving at the Chicago train stop. We were to go estate sale shopping that afternoon. At first, it was a bit awkward because there we were....me in the back seat and we just exchanged pleasantries for the first part of our time. By the end of the day when they dropped me at my station to get back downtown, we were both near tears in saying goodbye. It was so cool.

While I totally understand why people feel like online friendships are odd, I know they can be pretty kick ass.

I've made the majority of my friends in adulthood. There's no age requirement for making friends.

I couldn't agree more, Red! There's nothing at all wrong with that--friends don't always come in the conventional ways, but if you step outside the box, do what works for you, then you'll discover such hidden treasures!
