Sat Feb 02 12:38:11 PST 2013 Oregon bakery says no to same-sex wedding cake
The Oregon Department of Justice is looking into a complaint that a Gresham bakery refused to make a wedding cake for a same sex marriage. It started when a mother and daughter showed up at Sweet Cakes by Melissa looking for a wedding cake.

was reading thru the comments and this was my favorite:
It's a frickin' cake! Why ruin your business over a cake?! These people should be out of business not because of intolerance or bigotry but because of stupidity. If they don't believe in same sex unions, fine. They don't have to have one. They don't have to go to one. But it's a frickin' cake! Do they really think their god is so mean, angry and spiteful that he will smite them or cast them into the lake of fire for baking a frickin' cake?

If Oregon state law has included sexual orientation in its civil rights act, then this bakery may be in trouble if they don't change their stance really soon. When you open up a business to serve the public, and are being funded by public money, then you don't get to discriminate against any segment of the population - no matter what your personal beliefs are.

I know right? Some of these people are almost hilarious. You're in business to make money. If your "god" is so sensitive that he will smite you for baking a damn cake maybe you need to sit down & rethink a few things. If there's anything good to come of these situations it's that these people are becoming the butt of jokes which is a good sign.

What an ass. BTW, if he was referring to Leviticus, does he also not make cakes for ppl wearing poly/cotton blend clothes. They are supposed to be put to death. Oh, you mean he picks and chooses which parts of his holy book he subscribes too and just chose the part about lying with someone of the same sex a few lines away.

Exactly the kind of thing Dan Savage was talking about. It's buffet christianity. They pick the parts that appeal to their own personal opinions & disregard the rest.

It is a fricking cake. At the same time, that goes BOTH ways. It's a frickin cake! Who cares if they don't serve you? Private businesses have the right to refuse service, as far as I am concerned. If you don't like it, go somewhere else. After all, it's a fricking cake. You're going to cry discrimination and make a stupid fuss over what is nothing more than a fricking cake? It's a cake! You don't have a right to private services. And if gay wedding cakes are not part of this bakery's services, go elsewhere and let them suffer the loss.
I mean if a bakery refused to cater my child's communion party or whatever, I would just go somewhere that did. It's a fricking cake. If a store doesn't give you what you want, go somewhere else and stop trying to exploit it to grab 15 minutes of fame. (And turn the baker into a martyr. haha)
Furthermore, it's not the government's job to punish the beliefs of private business owners, even if they do think they are stupid. A business has a right to make stupid choices. It's not government's job to tell bakeries that "you have to bake cakes for gay weddings or else." It's not government's business what occasions a bakery chooses to sell it's services for. If a bakery wants to not make cakes for any occasion, that's their right to do so without government involvement of the slightest, stupid or not. Any public backlash from that business is something the business will have to accept.

It is a fricking cake (yes, in the grand scheme of things it is just a fucking cake and that does help to detract from the larger issue. Discrimination.) At the same time, that goes BOTH ways. It's a frickin cake! Who cares if they don't serve you? (What if they were refusing to sell a cake to an interracial or inerfaith couple?) Private businesses have the right to refuse service, as far as I am concerned (Another reason why I'm grateful you're not in charge of anyone but yourself. Private businesses DO NOT have the right to universally refuse service). If you don't like it, go somewhere else. (And if every other business you have access to or is in your price range feels the same way I guess it's tough shit for you, huh?) After all, it's a fricking cake. You're going to cry discrimination and make a stupid fuss over what is nothing more than a fricking cake? It's a cake! (Again, yeah, it's just a fucking cake but what if it was a hotel that was refusing to give them a room? Is there a threshold passed which it stops being just "a fricking fill in the blank" and becomes something worthy of protest?) You don't have a right to private services. And if gay wedding cakes are not part of this bakery's services, go elsewhere and let them suffer the loss. (It's not a "gay" wedding cake. It's a wedding cake for a gay (lesbian) couple. If the bakery makes them for straight couples, they have to make them for everyone.) I mean if a bakery refused to cater my child's communion party or whatever, I would just go somewhere that did. It's a fricking cake. If a store doesn't give you what you want, go somewhere else and stop trying to exploit it to grab 15 minutes of fame. (And turn the baker into a martyr. haha) (St. Eclair?) Furthermore, it's not the government's job to punish the beliefs of private business owners, even if they do think they are stupid. (No, the government shouldn't...and DOESN'T tell bakeries they have to sell wedding cakes at all. But if they make the bussiness decision to sell any, the government does have the power to make them sell them to everybody.) Any public backlash from that business is something the business will have to accept.

Force dude to make a cake for a customer he don't want gotta make you wonder how many times he gonna spit in the frosting. Some battles not worth the trouble. Take your $$$ somewhere else and blast him to everybody you know.

I was thinkin' the same thing. Do Not buy food from a hostile source. Don't piss off restaurant staff by being a pissy customer - unless you like piss (or worse) in your food.

That point of FM's argument is truly valid.
I do not think that i would have signed a formal complaint against them if i was in that situation, but I DO think that i would have alerted the public, or at least the gay community in that area. He would not have gotten much business from them after that.
I also do see FM's point of serving only those you want to... many business still have signs saying that they have the right to refuse service--- to rowdy customers, to those that would overflow a room's capacity, to those with a lot of non paying escorts that would take up the space of paying customers... but as alan said, discrimination is discrimination.
We did have a case here in philly where joey vento put up a sign that asked patrons to order in english. So man foreigner come to the city, that if u cannot undestand the order, you get it wrong which causes problems and loss of revenue. It was made a huge deal out of---they saw it as a refusal to serve customers. However, all he wanted was to BE able to properly serve them.
all in all... get out of business if u dont want ppl's business.

I suppose you have every right to alert the public and people would have every right to boycott him. "Discrimination is discrimination" but all businesses do it. Some forms of discrimination are just a lot more politically correct than others. Look, many see same-sex marriage as wrong. That is their right. If they own a business, it's their right to choose not to offer their services for those occasions. They have to choose to accept whatever flack comes from that. But it's still not the government's business. For all this talk of people wanting a separation of Church and State, they sure as heck don't mind government telling religious people to check their beliefs at the Church doors. If you're a religious business owner, it's your right not to participate in activities you find sinful.
Just like if you don't want to sell non-kosher products, or you run a steakhouse and don't wanna make special Lenter alternatives. You can choose to do it and it might even be wise, but just because you might be alienating customers with your decision doesn't mean it's government's job to persecute you for it. Businesses have the right to serve who they choose just as customers have the right to not shop there.

“Ace Of Cakes” Duff Goldman Steps Up For Lesbian Couple Stiffed By Bigoted Baker
Not long after news surfaced that an Oregon baker was refusing to make a wedding cake for a lesbian couple, Ace of Cakes star Duff Goldman stepped up and offered to make the women the cake of their dreams.
In January, master baker Aaron Klein told the couple that his company, Sweet Cakes, was declining their business—and called them “abominations unto the Lord.” His actions violate Oregon’s anti-discrimination laws, but rather than wait for this to drag out in court, Goldman went on HuffPo Live and told host Mike Sachs he’d make their wedding cake for free—and even bring it all the way from his bakery in Los Angeles to the women out in Portland.
“This guy’s an idiot,” Goldman tells Sachs about Klein. “For a cake decorator to feel like he really needed to take a stand…it makes no sense, It’s petty, it’s small.”

But beliefs aren’t enough to cover him under state law. The Oregon Equality Act of 2007 prohibits discrimination against people based on their sexual orientation and gender identity. The statute includes public accommodations, such as businesses.
