A team of Valley high schoolers and parents rally for a separate prom that bans gays.

NBC 2's Paige Preusse reports how Sullivan High School says there's nothing legally they can do to allow it... several students and parents are taking matters into their own hands.

Several parents, students, and others who believe gays should be banned from the Sullivan High School prom met Sunday at the Sullivan First Christian Church.

"We don't agree with it and it's offensive to us," said Diana Medley.

Their idea is to create their own separate...traditional prom. Students say there are several others from their high school who agree, but are afraid to take a stand.

"If we can get a good prom then we can convince more people to come and follow what they believe," said student Kynon Johnson.

And now they want everyone to know where they stand.

"We want to make the public see that we love the homosexuals, but we don't think it's right nor should it be accepted," said a local student.

But not all in the community think what they're doing is right.

"We shouldn't be condemning people, and that's what judgement is. Christ came to save the people not to condemn them."

Local man Jim Davis says we've all sinned...so why should gays be treated with less respect?

"Love them as a person. You don't have to love what they do, because the gays may not love all the mistakes you make," said Davis.

Diana Medley is a special education teacher in town. She doesn't believe anyone is born gay.

"I believe that it was life circumstances and they chose to be that way; God created everyone equal," said Medley.

"Homosexual students come to me with their problems, and I don't agree with them, but I care about them. It's the same thing with my special needs kids, I think God puts everyone in our lives for a reason," said Madley.

"'So the same goes for gays? Do you think they have a purpose in life?' No I honestly don't. Sorry, but I don't. I don't understand it. A gay person isn't going to come up and make some change unless it's to realize that it was a choice and they're choosing God," said Medley.

Several local pastors support the separate prom movement.

"Christians have always been prepared for a fight. Jesus gave us armor for the front, not the back; we're not running anymore," said Bill Phegley with Carlisle Church.

Others, on the other hand, think they're casting stones... instead of spreading love.

"The feeling of being loved and belonging is universal," said Davis.

"We want to make the public see that we love the homosexuals, but we don't think it's right nor should it be accepted," said a local student.

Sometimes it is too hard to say 'oxymoron' when moron is so much more appropriate.

Dang. I was all set to copy/paste that bon mot but Shale beat me to it. Sticks out like a sore thumb, don't it? I can almost hear, "Oh we love the nigras but it ain't right that they be allowed at the same lunch counter."

I have a better idea. Why don't these junior bigots just stay home on prom night. They are not in the majority and if this is a public school they have no right to dictate who can and cannot go to their class prom.

I would love to see a counter action taken by gay and straight alike banning the haters from the school sponsored prom. Then the junior bigots can hold whatever dance they want in their church basement but one that is not school sponsored. They can pay for their own prom out of their own pockets. Or have no prom at all.

Agree. If these bigoted assholes don't like it, just stay home that night. Or maybe have that sock hop in the basement of the local Church of the Chosen Few. But the school shouldn't have to organize a separate one for their delicate sensitivities. They can pay for it themselves & dance to old Geoff Moore & the Distance songs.

Are there really THAT MANY out-gay kids at this Indiana school for this to even be a real concern for them?

Every year at about this time stories like this break out about how some petulant students (usually backed by jaded parents) at some out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere high school want a separatist prom because they can't stand the idea of having to integrate with 'those people' for just one night...as if they haven't had to throughout the school year.

Bottom line: if you find the premise of having to share space in the same auditorium with people who aren't in your clique that damn intolerable, then stay your ass at home while the other 80-90% of the student body attends, has a good time and doesn't miss you.

Ironically the pastor of the church where the prom is scheduled to be held disagrees with the bitch.

They should just form their own prom. It'd probably be less trashy than anything a school would put on anyway.

really... who cares. If the gays are going to the real prom, and the bigots are forming their own... then why would the gays care and be offended that they were not invited to a prom in which they never had any reason to go.

IF the gays were banned from the original prom, i would have a problem, but if students/parents CHOOSE not to be around ppl with different beliefs, then that is their decision.

While I think these people are a bunch of losers who shouldn't be catered to, I really have to agree with W2L here. If diversity is a little too "scary" in their widdle world, then let THEM segregate themselves from the group and have what'll no doubt be a lame prom, while the rest go to the real one and have a good time. I would find this story more offensive if they were trying to get the gay kids excluded from the real prom. As is it's more pathetic than anything else.

It's Indiana. They should form their own prom if it's that serious.

I agree, they should have sock hop at their church. They are wrong to try and use the Bible to control what goes in in a public high school.
