What's your opinion of father-daughter dances? My gym had one over the weekend. I didn't attend, just saw the announcement. Much as I adore my daughter and love spending time with her, the premise of this still seems borderline creepy to me.

Maybe when I was a little kid it would've seemed like a fun idea, but once you get into your teen years, your daddy is really about the LAST person you want to dance with, I think. Creepy in second place only to those chastity balls.

LOL. Pretty much. I took Ally to one at her school when she was 6 or 7(?). I treasure the picture of us together but not long after that come the teen years. By then we both would rather go see a ball game or a movie together.

I dont think they are creepy.. and i would have gladly gone to the dance with my "dad"... my bio dad died when i was three and i adopted my sis' hubby as my dad. when i was a teen, me and my friends were 'daddys girls' and manipulated our dads to get what we wanted to get money and rides to the mall... to get our moms to extend curfew. It was a really special relationship! eventually he gave me my first car, paid for my wedding at which he walked me down the aisle... and practically gave me my house. even now we go on a "date" night a couple times a year. I once asked him if he regretted that being the father of three boys... that he was unable to have a girl... he replied "I had a girl.. you... and you were plenty enough!" love that man!

What I DO find unsettling about the dances is that they did not single out as many girls in earlier decades as they do today. Having a dead father what would i have done if i didnt have my "dad". i would not have been given the opportunity... what about the dead beat dads who want nothhing to do with their kids? so let the kid feel even MORE bad about the situation than they did having a dad that didnt want them?
