Did you parents want you to reimburse them for your college education? Mine didn't, but my BF's parents act like they do, and constantly bring it up, even around me, which I think is tacky and slightly humiliating for him. According to him, when he was in school his parents never said anything to him about paying them back someday. Then about five years after he graduated, they started mentioning it to him.

Should parents ask for their money back for college, especially if it was them who wanted their kids to attend?

Most of the time, parents want their money back if they feel like their kids college education was squandered (they either didn't graduate, or are working a job beneath what they went to school for.) Parents see that as money they wasted on their end, resent it and use "when are you going to pay me back for school?" as a way to shame their adult son or daughter for working at Taco Bell.

I bet few parents of neurosurgeons want their money back....the bragging rights are enough.

In general, I don't agree with that kind of idea...however I have said before that that would be my expectation if I spent a lot of money to send my kid to school and they threw it all away to do somethign sleazy like porn movies. If you want to be a whore, your parents shouldn't have wasted their money trying to get you an education to better yourself and make SOMETHING out of yourself.

There was no agreement when they gave him the money so your bf doesn't owe them a dime. And I think it's pretty damn selfish of his parents to ask for their money back because they invested in their CHILD'S education. My folks didn't ask for their dough back and I hardly graduated from college. Was only half way into it before I dropped out. Although I went to a private school and the money that they saved, needless to say, was gone quickly.....it wasn't that much.

I guess it's one thing if there was some kind of understanding that they expected to be repaid but now out of the blue? Your BF should just tell them he's saving his money to put them in the nicest nursing home possible.

I think it depends. If they told you to go to college and offered to take care of you, they shouldn't expect it back.

If they paid his tuition and there was no agreement that he'd reimburse them, then I don't think they should come at him like that. If you're gonna LOAN money then it should be clear from the start that it's just a loan.

If it isn't established up front & in writing that there are limitations or requirements, then it should be considered a gift. It's extremely tasteless to pull this kind of thing after the fact.
