So yeah, I got offered a new gig today. And............................................................I kinda don't want it. Pays more than what I'm currently making, benefits and the pension is better.........................but I'm so leery about taking it. How fucking crazy is THAT?! I think I may need to stop drinking. You guys think maybe the alcohol has affected my brain cells somewhat?

Are you more afraid of the change than anything else? It may be that despite more money and better perks, you may have an intuition that where you are now offers more stability. I have known a couple people who traded up only to be let go in this economy. One moved half way across the country to do so.

Nah, I just think that you know what you have and are a bit skeptical about what you might get into. If its a secure thing then I would go for it.

Are the hours better or worse? That's what usually colors my perception of how well I'm gonna like a new job. If they can give me a comfortable M-F daytime shift, then I'll deal. If they only give me X amount of hours and then schedule me all over the place from week to week, then I tell myself that the job is only temp.

I'm leery because A) after doing the first orientation and finding out more about it, my interest decreases. I don't know if I wanna go through all that. B) after finding out the salary, I did the math. Taxes, pension, medical benefits, insurance, dues, contributions to 401K, deferred comp, etc.....I'm not going to be bringing home much more than what I'm bringing now. Which brings me to C) you're supposed to move up the economic ladder significantly when you get a new gig....not remain stagnant or damn near the same while doing more work. D) They want me to quit where I'm working now, just to train with them. After training, I have to past a series of tests. If I don't pass (which I'm not saying I won't pass) then I don't get to continue the employment. How the hell you're gonna tell me I have to quit my job when I'm not guaranteed to continue this one? I am so dead set against that. Add the fact that I'm about stacking my money. Two jobs is extra dough for me. You're making me lose money. Add the fact that my current gig is flexible (I LOVE gig that's flexible) and would not in any way impact my ability to train. I can do both. Add the fact that my current position isn't guaranteed to be waiting for me if I resign then want to come back. Somebody else is going to snatch that up quick. And if I don't pass training, I'm out of a damn job.......both ways. In this economy, I'm a fan of security. And it's other things that I'm not at liberty to really get into details about. (sighs) I'm in between a rock and a hard place. Not very often where Nystyle just lost. I really don't know what I should do.

Don't quit your other job until you know for certain this one is in the bag and you like it. Ask the place you've been working to give you less hrs. for the next few weeks while you see what this new gig is about. I would tell these new employers in the meantime: I WON'T QUIT THE PLACE I'VE BEEN AT NOW UNTIL I KNOW FOR SURE THAT THIS IS A SURE BET.
But it sounds like you know you won't like this new job and if you're that uncertain this early on, then you may want to go with that. My feelings have NEVER lied to me when it came to my initial ambivalence about a new job. If early on I think it's gonna be something I won't like, 95% of the time I'm right.

NY, I wish I could help but there's too much I don't know. I think Red has a good point about maybe being a little leary of change but look on the bright side. It's pretty nice to have to make this kind of choice in this economy. A wise man once told me, "love your job and you'll never have to work a day in your life." How do you feel most days about going to your present job? How far do you think you can go in it? How far do you think you can go in the new one?

I can see why you're so dead set against this new gig. Obviously the end result is up to you, but if you're against this new job, if there's something inside of you telling you not to take it, I would definitely look at that. I don't think you're at all "retarded" or "crazy" - I think you should listen to your gut.

I DID!!! They won't 'let' meeeeeeeeeeeeee...............I'm even opened up to taking a leave of absence from my job to see if I'll even like training, they said I can't even do that because it would be a 'conflict of interest'. Apparently, the people I currently work for and the people that I start working for uses the same company or some shit for payroll.

Yeah, I'm still weighing the options. I'll make my decision by Monday.
