If you were/are in the market for a new home, would you be willing to buy a severely dilapidated house that had potential and put in the work to restore it, or would you rather buy a house that was already in decent condition?

Chris, do you mean restore the house yourself or pay a contractor? Regardless, I’d probably go for something that wasn’t falling apart or assuming I had the funds I’d rather buy some land, design and build my dream home.

I own my own house and when I bought it, it was in move in condition so if I had to do it again, I would rather get one that I can just move right in. If I want to make any changes to it then I will do it while I am in it.

Depends on if it was a better decision for me financially. If I can get a loan to buy a dilapidated house, have enough left over to restore it and fix it up to my liking and the cost would be much less that what I would've paid to buy a house in great condition outright, I might go for it. Problem is, most dilapidated homes are in not so good/poor neighborhoods. And I ain't living in no bad ass neighborhood. Then again, maybe I'd still that take option if I was planning to rent out the house.

Nope. I'm not the type to be inspired by the potential in something rough. I need to be able to move right in immediately. I don't wanna play Mr. Fixit....plus, I don't have a penchant for carpentry.

I would but only because my guy is a contractor, so financially, it would greatly benefit us. What he can't do, he has great contacts to do for a good price.
But, if I was not with him, I would buy a fixer upper so long as it was basic fixes and nothing to do with making the place more energy efficient or structure issues. That is just way more huge than the average joe realizes when they buy a fixer upper.
