I went to a diner for brunch today and just had the worst service. Waitress came to my table to take my order. After I specifically told her I wanted milk with my tea, she just brings the tea and sets it down. Doesn't even bother to come back and check to see if I needed anything else (like more napkins, which I did need). I didn't even say anything. I didn't flag her down or anything, I just waited to see if she would come back before my food arrive and my tea got cold. The only time she did come back was to give me my food, then I told her I needed the milk and that's when she got it. My tea is lukewarm by this time. And throughout the time of me sitting there, I watched her served these old ass people better than she did me. Oh, but when she saw I was almost done, she's gonna come back and and ask me if I need anything. Ate my food, got up to pay the check and bounced. Bitch didn't get a dime from me. See, I used to be a waitress, so I know how important those tips are when it comes to making your money. And since I used to be a waitress, whenever I'm in restaurant I pay close attention to what other waitresses are doing and how they're doing it more intently than I did before I was a waitress. I only tip according to service. Your tip reflects it. Slack service, slack or NO (which is more often than slack) tip. Good service, double the sales tax. Great service......you're going to be a happy camper when I leave.

Do you tip?
Do you tip at restaurants? If you do, are you a generous tipper? How much do you tip normally?

Re: Do you tip?
I seldom go out, but when I do, yes I do tip. I don't get people who say 'they shouldn't complain about minimum wage because they DO get tips', well because they get tips, their salary IS low. And it's like that at fast food places too, the employers think the teenagers can do all this crap for low money because they get tips too, but most of the people who eat there are ALSO teenagers, how often are they going to tip?
I also usually tip when I go to the store and need one of the bagboys to carry the stuff out, and when I order a pizza.

I tip but I'm not always generous. I never really know what's "appropriate", so I leave a dollar.

Well, I can guarantee $1 isn't appropriate, that's damn cheap. To answer Ny's post, I do tip and if I get a good waitress, I'm a very generous tipper. If the waitress isn't any good though, I don't bother to tip very well.

Re: Do you tip?
I don't tip well usually. I am a 10%-er. And if service is crap, I go less than that.
I know that wait staff make their money from tips. But, the (selfish) way I look at it is they wouldn't get a dime from me had I opted to dine across the street.
I am very cheap. I know this and I know that if I was not as selfish, I would tip better. But to get more than 10% from me, I better have experienced something above and beyond.

Re: Do you tip?
If the server was extra hospitable and on their game, I will leave a nice tip. If they just did their job to passable standard, then I leave a passable tip, which can be as low as a dollar.

My ex boyfriend used to think just like that. We'd go to dinner and he would NEVER tip. I always left the tip. His reason was "they chose this job so they should just do their job and not expect anything". And I had to tell him that that would be true, if they got paid the minimum wage. Waiters get paid much less than minimum wage because the government knows that they make their money from the tips. It's the nature of the job. So if she/he was a good server, why not leave them something? And I since I used to be a waitress, I know how it is first hand.

Re: Do you tip?
If the service is good I leave a very generous tip, if its mediocre, I leave a modest tip. This past summer in Palm Springs I was in a restaurant with friends and the waiter took his sweet time coming to us to get our order. The order also took over 45 minutes to arrive when it should have been to us in 15. He never came and asked us if we wanted refills on our drinks or anything else for that matter. To make it worse, he screwed up my order and gave me something I didn't order. My friends were paying that bill for the meal but I was leaving the tip. Can you imagine their horror when I left 50 cents on the table? We argued about it but I told them thats how I feel how much the service was worth. I won in the end and they ran out embarrassed.

Re: Do you tip?
We usually tip at restaurants where the server actually brings you food, not just drinks(like at a buffet). xD Tips also depend on good service.
We usually leave 1/7 for mediocre service
We leave leave 1/6 for average service
We leave 1/5 for exceptional service
I consider us exceptionally good tippers.

Re: Do you tip?
I always tip at restaurants, barber shops, the taxi driver, etc. Whenever a tip is usually expected I will tip. In restaurants, I usually tip 20% for good service and 15% for mediocre service. For extremely poor service, I tip exactly $1.00 (because it's an insult). Otherwise, I'd have to consider myself a pretty generous tipper. I don't calculate tip percentage when it comes to things like getting a haircut or a taxi ride. I generally tip a few extra dollars (depending on how good of service I got).Nystyle709 wrote:Do you tip at restaurants? If you do, are you a generous tipper? How much do you tip normally?

Re: Do you tip?
Yes, I tip and tip well for good service (which I just about always get). I do usually draw the line at places with tip jars on the counter. There are exceptions though like the Dunkin Donuts where I was a regular and it got to be where they had my order ready by the time I got to the counter. I use one of those rechargable DD cards so I usually saved the tip until Friday when I would put $5 in the jar.
Also, I can't help myself from adding this:

I tip when I'm paying with cash. If I'm paying with the card, then maybe not. It's easy to forget in those instances.

Sounds like when me and my cousins went out to this buffet style restaurant for lunch. It was only like 5 of us.....well, to make a long story short, we got the same horrible service you did Tony. We all knew we weren't going to tip her but when we got up to leave, I left her a penny. Then two of my cousins threw in additional pennies. So that's 3 cents total. As we were walking out in the parking to the car, the waitress came outside and threw the pennies out as us and gave us quite a few choice words. We were all cracking up. I went back in there and told her her service was horrible and I will be back later to speak to the manager about it and about the little stunt she just pulled. She acted like she wanted to throw 'bows. But there were five of us. She knew better.

I know its a horrible thing to do but hey, we are paying customers and that is your job to make sure that we get everything that we want including being pleasant (very hard thing to do here in NY) and to make sure we are satisfied at the end of our meal. I agree with what you did NY.
