    How old were you?
    What did you do?
    What did it teach you?
    Are you still doing it?

I was 13, working for cash at a convenience store a friend of the family owned. I cleaned and stocked, then cashiered, and finally cooked(there was a grill and deli). I worked there off and on until I was able to get a regular job at 16.

I learned how to avoid being short-changed at a time when there was a rash of that happening in town, how to count back change properly, general customer service, and food handling. I learned to do a good job, even on things that no one might notice. I learned how to deal with spoiled people that don't know or appreciate what they have (the owner's family taught me this accidentally by simply being that way).

I'm not still doing this, but do carry the same ethics and think of this man and the lessons he taught me in my daily work now and then. And when I'm cooking dinner Smile

My first official job was babysitting. In my early teens, I also helped a bar owner serve Friday lunch, but that was short lived because the town complained about it because I was not old enough. My first official job was at 15 as a housekeeper in a nursing home.

The job in the nursing home (that I did till 18) was so valuable. I learned a lot of lessons there about the general working world. I used to play cards with a woman who would always beg me to when I was finished with work. Rumors quickly spread about me that I was doing it on the clock, which I was absolutely not. Then, a few months down the line, I was awarded an award for going above and beyond when my supervisor nominated me. And it was then made public that I was doing it on my own time.

But the lessons were beyond that, of course, just in working with the residents.

My first real job was 3 days after graduating when I was 18 and went into the US Air Force for 4 years.

But I did work one summer while visiting my grandparents in Mississippi. The county hired boys to clear the brush off the gravel back roads with sling blades. Hot sweaty work but if we came to a creek we could go swimming and sometimes the crew boss would bring a watermelon.

I guess it taught me how to do hot sweaty work, and enjoy camaraderie with others on the work gang.

I used to work for my mother's boyfriend who was a wall paper hanger. I did the demo (tearing the old stuff off the walls, taking down the light fixtures, etc.) and putting the paste on the new wall paper. I was 16 or 17. My first "real" job, when the government got involved with payroll deductions, was as a busboy at a diner when I was 17. I used to work over 30 hours on a weekend. That only lasted a couple of months until I got a job in a book store.

I was 13. My first job was working for my father. I used to prepare the boxes and other packaging materials that he used to deliver items/orders in. Did some secretarial stuff too, answered the phones and wrote down information. I did that for him every summer when me and my brother stayed with him for the summer. My brother was working as well. Paid me $300 a week and my brother $150. Not bad for a 13 and 8 year old. No, I don't do it anymore since my dad doesn't live up here anymore, but I can honestly say I loved my job. Since he had all of the stuff at the house, all we had to do was make sure it was packed before he left for work in the morning. So we basically made our own hours. Taught me responsibility because I know I had to have my job done by a certain time, time management because if he told me how much packaging he needed (and it was A LOT most of the time) I had to budget my time to make sure I could get it done by the next morning. So that did mean not staying outside for long periods of time sometimes. I also learned money management and how running a business works, how to be self-employed. Funny thing, since I'm working for somebody else and not myself.......but I know I have the tools to do it. I just need an idea and some seed money.

My first job was when I was 16, a cart grabber at a supermarket. It stunk though because I started this job in Feb. Always freezing outside.

My first job was busing tables at a local restaurant called The Ram's Horn when I was sixteen. My parents didn't initially want me to work, but I convinced them to let me do it on weekends. From there, it was expanded to four days a week.

At 14, I was mowing lawns for money, then by 16 I had moved on to being a cashier at the local grocery store and graduated to the office where I did the account books for them. At 19, I switched over to work in a fabric store, that has since gone out of business. When I was 20, I took a second job when I wasn't at the fabric store, and worked at the hospital I still do, every other weekend drawing blood samples from the inpatients and Emergency Room admits.

Now, 24 years later, I'm still there, but in a lab tech/supervisory role.

I was about 13 years old I used to rake leaves and help clean up yards and garages and basements. I also used to work with my cousin who had a gardening business, man that was hell in the summertime.
