There is a certain irony here. This is a PG-13 movie that is appropriate for mature audiences only. Nah, a teenager should be allowed to watch it but it would be a rare one that could really enjoy it as I did.

Only half the aggregate movie critics liked it but there is a reason for that - they are movie critics. They were disappointed that the Clint Eastwood directed movie was not perfect, that it did not meet their expectations. Whereas I am a movie goer and can enjoy it for what it is, a character driven story that just ambles along and unfolds.

The movie opens with a beautiful day at some Asian beach when a tsunami hits killing thousands of people. But we are following Marie (Cécile De France) a woman who left her lover in the secure upper floors of a hotel and is in the market below. She drowns in the very believable overpowering rush of water.

Well OK, she survives - (You knew that, she's a main character).

But she was dead and it messes up her work as a TV journalist in France. (Oh, be prepared for her scenes to be in French with subtitles - told you it was an adult movie)

But that is the opening in one part of the world. We have protagonists all over, like twin brothers Marcus & Jason (George & Frankie McLaren), London school kids who have to take care of their junkie mother.

Then there is George (Matt Damon) a once prominent psychic in San Francisco who can talk to dead people. All he needs to do is touch a person's hand and he connects to the dead in their lives but he had to stop this business because it was ruining any chance of him having a normal life, which is why he walked away from it and is now working a blue-collar job at a Bay Area warehouse.

His brother Billy (Jay Mohr) sees George's psychic ability as a (money making) gift but George sees it as a curse. However, Billy cajoles him into giving one reading to a client of his and word of that gets out, causing all sorts of upheaval in George's life.

We follow these three different ongoing stories, all touched by death in some way and their trying to connect with the hereafter and make sense of it all. Needless to say, San Francisco George must eventually meet the London kid ...

... and the French journalist who wrote a book about near death experience.

Don't expect a lot of spiritual answers about the hereafter or any explanations about much of anything except George's psychic abilities. This is just about the characters and their stories, including George who tries to connect with a fellow student (Bryce Dallas-Howard) at his evening cooking class. I like Matt Damon's on screen portrayals of troubled, hesitant good guys trying to cope.

I enjoyed the movie, tho admittedly it was slow paced. But the characters' stories were interesting. So if you like life drama with a hint of the supernatural this movie might also be enjoyable to you.
