Do you believe that arrogance and conceitedness to be a mask for insecurity?

Sure, in some cases but I think some arrogant pricks really do think they are better than everyone else.

I think it can definitely be a mask for insecurity. And then there are some people, like Alan said, who really do think they're better than everyone. In either case, they're conceited and that's probably one of the most disgusting traits a person can have.

Generally speaking, I believe so, yes. Well adjusted people have no need to keep a pretentious view of everything.

Some of the time.

But, really, aren't we all insecure about something? Be it something with our looks, past, family history...the list is endless of things that could be the thorn in someone's paw. But most of us don't put forward arrogance to over-compensate for what we are insecure about.

On the other side of it, I think that many people appear arrogant or conceited a lot of times when they are not, due to insecurity. For example, the person who doesn't smile back because she thinks her teeth are hideous. Or the person who thinks he is stupid, so doesn't participate in conversations.
