    Burlesque Burlesque

I think I might see it this weekend. Not really a fan of Cher's music, but I like her movies.

This was my third movie to see this weekend and it was a nice formulaic romantic comedy with music numbers by two great singers, Cher and Christina Aguilera. This is another of those movies you go to and enjoy without giving it too much thot like the critics whom only 32% liked it, while 80% of audiences did.

Have to admit that part of the reason I wanted to see it was to check out Cher, who BTW is about my age. OK, I understand the plastic and botox but how did she get rid of her chicken neck? Oh well, she's still a hot 64-year-old. Unfortunately no fantasies about getting together with her - she likes young guys (as do I).

Oh, the movie. Well Ali (Aguilera) is a girl who gets fed up with her small town in Iowa and gets a one-way bus ticket to LA. She has visions of becoming an entertainer and gets bowled over by seeing the girls performing in Tess' (Cher) lip-sinc Burlesque show.

The girl has moxie and gets a job waitressing where she befriends the cute bartender Jack (Cam Gigandet). She later forces an audition and again thru her persistence gets in the chorus line. She does well in the show but when the sound goes out on the lip-sinc routine and they are about to drop the curtain, Ali belts out the tune acappella, the band picks up and the show is saved to standing ovations. (Don't tell me you didn't see that coming)

So there is romantic teasing between Ali and Jack, who is not only gorgeous but a really nice guy. (He's so gorgeous Ali thot he was gay). There are gay characters in this movie, namely Tess' best friend and confident, Sean (Stanley Tucci) who comforts her as the club is about to be foreclosed.

Altho Cher gets top billing, this movie is a showcase for Aguilera, who has a beautiful strong voice and does all the old retro songs really well. Cher does a couple of numbers and during one scene she sings a very appropriate song.

Marcus (Eric Danehe) the rich developer wanting to buy Tess out, takes an interest in Ali that complicates things a bit but you can be assured that everything will work out for the best by the...

The show much go on. And the small town girl (Christina Aguilera) with the big dreams goes to Los Angeles to make it happen. You know the story. It's been done hundreds of times.

I'm a sucker for these type films, even if they are familiar, predictable, cliches, and not much of a plot. Most of the numbers are out of Cabaret or Bob Fosse musical.

Ms. Aguilera can sing and dance, so who cares if she can't act. And Cher...as the proprietor....hasn't lost it one iota. She offers two dazzling numbers. One of those campy guilty pleasure trips you occasional need.

Haven't seen it, no desire to. But from the commercials, it looks like a tacky play on Moulin Rouge.
