Before we get to Faster, a little background about where I'm coming from. In 1974, I was really getting into Eastern Philosophy; Kharma, Sanskara, non-killing vegetarian, the whole Ahimsa stuff. Then I went to watch Death Wish and every time Charles Bronson off'd some despicable low-life I felt it on a visceral level. That conflict with my non-violence philosophy upset me then but not any more. I still don't kill animals and wish to be non-violent but have given up on being some sage guru and dig the hell out of movies that show some seriously wronged person wreaking vengeance on those who deserve it.
So, if you liked Taken or Law Abiding Citizen, then this is your movie.
We open on Driver (Dwayne Johnson - Better described here as The Rock) getting out of prison after 10 years. As the Warden thumbs thru pics of the carnage he did to people who dared pick fights with him you know he is a badass. He is hulking, angry and barely contained as he goes thru his exit interview.
Driver - Has Anger Issues
As soon as he leaves the prison gates in the middle of nowhere he starts running, eventually reaching a car (1970-71 Hybrid Chevelle SS) laid away for him.

He has a list of people and where they can be found and he proceeds to find them and blow them away with no concern for who sees him. He knows he is on a fast mission of revenge. With flashback we know that he and his brother with friends pulled off a bank heist, that they were set up and all were killed; only Driver survived to do time.
Next we see a strung out cop (Billy Bob Thornton) barely together coming onto the case with the lead cop Cicero (Carla Gugino) who clearly doesn't want to work with him. But they go about following the carnage left in Driver's path.
To complicate matters, Killer (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) a young, rich, type-A personality hit man is hired by someone to take out Driver.

The rest is just one fast ride as Driver seeks out all those he has to kill, Killer seeks out Driver and the cops seek out both of them. It was a fun matinee action flick that I enjoyed without guilt. | |
