I couldn't find much in print about this movie. I think the normal critics just blew it off. Saw a brief ad on TV and told myself that is the matinee material I want to waste some early afternoon on. (It helped that this week I watched Jonah Hex on DVD, which put me in the mood).

What can I say about this movie? It was billed as a Western, Action & Adventure, Science Fiction & Fantasy.

Reminded me a little of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon with the choreographed Ninja fight scenes that defy the laws of physics. It also brought back memories of the old TV show Kung Fu, since much of the setting is in the 19th Century American West, following a quiet, wandering expatriate from Asia with his Eastern wisdom and martial arts.

(It is interesting that Bruce Lee, one of the actors considered for Kung Fu before they chose David Carradine, claimed in 1971 to have proposed a TV series about a martial arts wanderer in the Old West called "The Warrior.")

Anyhow, we open in Asia with Yang (Handsome Korean actor, Jang Dong-gun) the world's greatest swordsman hacking his way thru a rival clan, killing them all. All, except a baby he finds, which he should kill but doesn't. His own ruthless clan then turns on him and he runs off with the baby to the American West looking for a warrior friend of his that had gone there before. (Hmm, does sound like Kung Fu, doesn't it?)

There he comes on a small hardscrabble town with the remnants of a circus (Oh, gotta mention that this movie is somewhat surreal). His friend is gone but he takes over his laundry business with the help of his friend's acquaintance Lynne (Kate Bosworth). Lynne has some violent history with the marauding gang led by The Colonel (Danny Huston) and Yang continues her martial arts training that his friend had started.

Well, The Colonel's gang comes back to terrorize the town, but the circus people band together to take them on. Ron (Geoffrey Rush) an old alcoholic turns out to be a sharpshooter and with the world's greatest swordsman and his new warrior girl friend, they take on the gang. Add to that, Yang's clan of assassins, which has sailed all the way from Asia to kill him and the baby, and you have one raucous three-way battle going on, with lots of shooting, exploding and slicing.

I would say it is a great teen movie but it is rated R; because of all the blood spurts I suppose - and The Colonel besides being a cold, heartless killer is a bit of a perv. So no one under 17 will be able to see it without parental permission. Too bad because it seemed to be just the movie for 13 year olds. I enjoyed it.
