    Tamara Drewe
    Movie Blurb by Shale

I played hooky today - just didn't want to ride my bike six miles to work at 7AM in 40 degree weather. But by noon it was sunny and not so cold so I biked to the Cineplex to pick up a movie that I had seen no trailers for but did see a print review in The Miami Herald with 3 stars.

The reason I hadn't seen anything about this romantic comedy was because it is an art flick from England that had made all the film festivals. But it did have something most romcoms don't - a story.

In fact, Tamara Drewe is adapted from a newspaper comic strip of the same name, which is a modern telling of 19th Century Thomas Hardy's novel, "Far from the madding crowd," which title is used as an ad for a writers' retreat in a small manor in the English countryside.

Famous and successful crime novelist Nicholas Hardiment (Roger Allam) owns the country house which is run by his wife, while he philanders about with young women groupies. In the writers' retreat is Glen (Bill Camp) a historical biographer who happens to be working on Hardy's bio and periodically brings out factoids about Hardy's randy ways.

Into this tranquil idyllic setting comes Tamara Drewe (Gemma Arterton) a columnist for a London newspaper to sell off her late mother's estate across the valley. She has had a do-over since leaving as a teen and is absolutely drop-dead gorgeous.

She is noticed by Andy (Luke Evans) one of her teen flings who is now working as the maintenance man at the writers' retreat.

She hires him to help get the rundown estate ready for sale, while she goes out and gets involved in a flaky relationship with a punk rock band drummer, Ben (Dominic Cooper).

Complicating things is a juvenile delinquent schoolgirl, Jody (Jessica Barden) with a crush on Ben and with her partner Casey (Charlotte Christie) wreaks havoc by breaking into Tamara's home and sending e-mails on her computer.

The story follows the main characters as they develop and interact, some interacting quite intimately. This isn't the usual romcom, in that the main characters whom we know should get together don't even move in that direction for most of the movie. They are both out having recreational sex with others.

I liked the movie; it has a few more dark moments than the usual romcom, which comes as a refreshing surprise. It may not be for everyone, lacks some of the standard flash of the Hollywood productions but has an interesting story.
