The Tourist

Rene Rodriguez of The Miami Herald didn't like this movie - gave it one star out of four. Only 20% of the aggregate reviewers at Rottentomatoes liked this movie and the reasons why were much like Rodriguez' - "The scenery and the stars are undeniably beautiful, but they can't make up for the slow, muddled plot, or the lack of chemistry between Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie." OK, that is a valid assessment, but like 80% of audiences I still enjoyed the movie.
If you saw the trailers, you know that the very beautiful Elise (Angelina Jolie) is a mysterious woman with secrets. She is being tailed in Paris by Scotland Yard operatives working for Detective Acheson (Paul Bettany) who hopes to find her lover Alexander Pearce an embezzler who has made off with millions of dollars. But Elise receives a note from AP that she is to go to Venice and on the train find someone of his build who could pass for him and take him with her. She eludes the police as if she were Salt, takes the train and finds a likely guy, Frank (Johnny Depp) a math teacher from the States on vacation.
Meeting on a Train
Who can refuse such an elegant woman? (Love the scene as Jolie walks thru the train and all the guys check her out - even those with other women - a little European cultural reality). Frank, like most of us guys just follows along and checks into the hotel with Elise.
Odd Couple Check into Lavish Hotel
Well, you know this is a bit of an action flick as bad people try to take out Elise, with Frank in tow. Elise manages to elude the first batch of killers on the canals of Venice.
Running Gun Battles in Venice
Elise drops Frank off at the airport, gives him some cash and tells him to go home, that her game has become too dangerous for him. But Frank doesn't do that, instead crashes a ball that Elise had told him about, messing up her meeting with AP.
It also messes up the cops chance to catch AP since they were tailing Elise, so they pick up Frank.
Cops Catch the Tourist
From this point there's more intrigue and a few surprises as the bad guys who want to get their money from AP and the cops who want to catch AP all run into each other.
I did enjoy the movie. It was comedic, despite some people being murdered and others killed by the police. The pairing of the elegant, gorgeous Elise with a schmo like Frank was in itself funny - like that will ever happen. Of course you can't take this film seriously. Enjoy.
