Was anyone here a 'D.A.R.E' kid; do you think it's a worthwhile program for kids in school?

I vaguely remember it but what I remember most was the teddy bear with the D.A.R.E. t-shirt - lol. I think I also remember doing those little booklets. I don't know if it was as big in Canada as in the US. We probably had our own programs.

I am torn on this. In my school, it was all pretty much a joke....As an adult, I still thought it was. My friend is chief of police in the small town near us, and he was really into it, including having a DARE car driven at the local drag race track, with a minor driving it...the minor was someone who was not well chosen, to say the least.

But, all that said, my son was very impressed with DARE when introduced to it in fifth grade last year. He admired and respected the DARE officer who worked with the class all year.

I guess what I think is that money for programs like that is not always well directed, but there are instances when it does work.

My 6th grade class did that DARE crap too. When we completed the course, we had a school wide assembly honoring us for being DARE kids....and guess what? The other grades laughed.

Their intentions are good but I don't know how effective it is.
