You would think the biggest fanbase for a movie of this sort would be among the Christian community, and it may be, but it's also suffered quite a backlash with Christian groups over the years, among other reasons, because for being a movie about Christ's ministering to His disciples, the movie lacks a resurrection sequence after the crucifixion.
Now, I saw it a few years ago at Easter and I fell in love with it immediately. I still watch it every Easter, I just love it, it's funny, it's got great music, I love everything about it. Of course, my mother didn't like it at all because she saw it as hippies, which she never liked, changing the scripture to fit their own purposes, which is NOT the case at all. My brother found out that the writer who created the original story for it, was arrested after he went to church wearing overalls, so in the play/movie you have these people dressed in bright colorful and baggy clothes and it's said to look like clowns, but they also go through all the different methods of theatrical acting so I think it all goes together very well.

Of course it was about Hippies. Many of us identified with the late JC in those days. It wasn't just that we looked like him.
But we saw the established Christian churches as the Philistines of the religion, just as Jesus had to deal with in his time. They followed scripture by rote while missing the "essence" of it as taught by the Essene from Nazareth.
I need to see this again - haven't seen it since '73. There were other plays at that time with the same theme. Salvation from 1969 and JC Superstar from '71.
I remember the LP of the songs from Salvation. Try listening to that while tripping on acid. HEAVY!

I guess I have to get the Godspell CD now and probably the DVD as well. I have $200.00 worth of Amazon Gift Certificates I need to spend so I guess they will be part of the package.
