What is your opinion about sexism in our current society? Do you feel that women are still treated unequally? In your opinion, does the feminist movement help or hurt the plight?

I'm sure some cases have women treated unequally but in all honesty, I don't see it anywhere near the problem it once was.

As for the feminist movement.... I'll stay quiet about them. Wink

Sexism is alive and rampant. Much like racism, it seems to have just gone underground. Has it improved since 1920? Yes. To where it needs to be? Hell no.

It's a known fact that women still aren't being paid the equal salaries to what their male counterparts in the same work fields in the same positions with the same training and experience are getting.

In the book Thelma & Louise and Women in Hollywood, it revealed that when they made the movie You've Got Mail, they only offered Meg Ryan what her salary would be, but Tom Hanks got the same salary AND a percentage of the profits, they never consulted her about that even though they're equally important to the movie ever getting off the ground.

Also, HOW many morons are there STILL in the world that when they feel a need to insult women, instead of calling them idiots like they do men, refer to women as LITTLE GIRLS or LITTLE LADIES, WHO ever berates a guy by calling him LITTLE MAN and even LITTLE BOY is not as condescending.

I never understood how this worked or got past EEOC. Most positions have a starting wage and it is the same for either gender. Now I can see the sexism going from there, when the guy gets promoted and the girl does not.

I have worked for minimum wages many times - so there is no sexism in underpaid positions.
I know when I was hired as a CNA on an ortho unit in the hospital, the supervisor mentioned how nice it would be to have a guy in the position. Yep, sexism going to take advantage of my upper body strength to lift incapacitated patients. I was getting the same rate of pay as the female CNA who called me in to do the extra heavy lifting.

Sexism is alive and prospering. Women still have to "prove" themselves at every turn in this society when it comes to anything that requires skill or authority. And when they DO, they get socially disparaged with terms like "bitch".

Among other things. When I was in a police class in college, the textbook I was reading contained comments and interviews given from past officers, one was a woman who was partnered with a man who was so opposed to having a woman partner, when she made a comment about something, he said he wouldn't even let her lick the sweat off his balls. Somehow I doubt VERY much he would say the same thing to a male partner.

ITA with this! Sexism is alive and flourishing. Plus, when it comes to child bearing and child rearing, women have an even tougher time coming back into the work force.

There are also some iditos out there expect the woman to be the nanny and maid and bow to their whims and wishes and basically be a domestic servant, with no respect in the home. Yes - I'm bitter about this one - had an encounter with a chauvinist who was looking for just that kind of woman and I wish I'd told him off, but was being too polite.

Anyway - women still face many challenges and there are some jobs out there in which sexism is really bad.

And this takes me back to when I posted on a board on IMDb asking basically, why do so many men hate women? And NOBODY had any idea what that meant, 'men don't hate women'...so all the violence statistics against women, and the fact that the #1 cause of death in pregnant women is murder by their husband/boyfriend and that Super Bowl Sunday has been declared the MOST dangerous day for a woman, is all just a bunch of stories people invented to make men look bad?

What's the most dangerous day for a man? Is the #1 cause of death for ANY kind of man murder by his wife/girlfriend? How many men are coming to work with black eyes saying they walked into doors? When was the last time you heard about a man taking a restraining order out against his wife, moving away from her, and she moves into his house and refuses to leave and nothing's done with her? See, that's why I don't buy when people say there's no war against women, that men don't hate them, etc., to me that's just a load of crap.
