All Quiet on the Western Front All-quiet-on-the-western-front-

A very powerful movie, even today 81 years later (hard to believe), I can only imagine the impact it had at the time of its premiere back in 1930. For its time and given how limited they were in their effeects, they could certainly make the horrors of war a reality, I'm still blown away by the amputee scenes, that's...I can't even describe it, speechless

    Has anyone else seen it?

Yes. I liked the origianl better than the remake with Richard (John-Boy Walton) Thomas and Ernest (McHale) Borgnine. I got the same sense of stupid loss as I did at the beginning of Gone With the Wind with all the eager young men foolishly wanting to run off to war without a clue as to the horrors that were waiting for them.

I think all wars are like that - it's a great sales pitch to get ppl fighting mad.

I remember my grandmother telling me that after Dec. 7, 1941 the good-ol-boys in Mississippi were going to go over and kick some Jap butt before breakfast. Four years of hell later ...

    bump

A few months ago I was going through the channels one Sunday night (silent Sundays) and on Turner Classic Movies, I saw a SILENT version of this movie...same footage but they had music and they had Paul speaking in title cards as he was explaining to the next batch of wannabe soldiers that they try not to die, some days that's all they do. And it ain't been seen since on Turner Classic Movies, or the regular talkie version either for that matter.

I think most libraries should have it. Ours does, which surprises me. And this is one book that, around here anyway, a lot of books you won't find available at any random sale but this one does tend to pop up on the second hand shelves quite a bit.

Think I seen this in school, it was probably the re-make Alan briefly mentioned. I really don't remember any part of the movie, but the name of the movie is what struck a chord.

I don't know about the remake, but the original is definitely one that once you see it, you won't forget it. For 1930 and having as limited movie effects as they did back then, they excelled at making it raw and gritty and disturbing because it was real, it was all stuff that was actually going on during the war. And they did it without gore and without being excessively bloody like they would today because sabes que 'it's got to look realistic', no, this movie proved less is FAR more.
