Has anybody seen both of these movies? I swear, whoever says the Al Pacino one is NOT a remake, and apparently there HAVE been people who believe this, is an idiot, the whole thing reeks of remake.
Now, I'm usually particular to older movies, however, while I thoroughly enjoyed the original with bootlegging Tony Camonte, I prefer the remake with Tony Montana and his supply of 'yeyo'.
One thing people say about the original though, some people believe that Tony and his sister Cesca's relationship is incestual, or close to it, that Tony looks as his sister as he does any other woman, I don't believe this, you watch the movie, he carries it way too far with her when he finds out she's dating, just like Tony does with Gina in the remake, because he's concerned about her, because he cares about his sister, he doesn't want her getting mixed up with the scum like him, he won't admit it but he knows it. Now I don't recall if it was explicitly said in the '83 movie or if I'm thinking of the novelization of it, but I remember Tony said he wanted Gina to find a nice guy to be with, laywer, doctor, something; and I think that's what the original Tony had in mind as well.
One thing I prefer about the original, the camaraderie between Tony and Cesca in the original showdown with the cops, yeah, he killed her husband just like Tony killed Manny in the remake, but she is going to go down fighting with him, she's not trying to kill him like Gina was. Of course another difference in the original they were fighting cops, in the remake it's the other drug dealers and assassins, quite a bit of difference.
Overall, I found both movies to be very satisfying.
