How do you feel about the southern tradition of reenacting the civil war? Do you think that it is a necessary tribute to history, offensive, or futile?

I think what Bill Maher said during New Rules sums it up for me. You know what I mean, Chris.

It starts at about the 2 min. mark.

LOL, the South is still mad at the fact that they lost it. I guess I don't care for the most part. It prob. makes them feel comfortable, lol.

My family is from Mississippi, where they are about to make vanity license plates commemorating Nathan Bedford Forrest (Remember Forrest Gump?)

Yeah, that guy who did war crimes as a Confederate officer (such as massacreing 300 mostly black soldiers after they surrendered - then torturing to death those still living) Then starting the KKK and being its first "Grand Wizard" of Americas pre-immenent terrorist organization.

All under the pretext of honoring the confederate heritage. This is akin to honoring Adolf Hitler, which I'm sure some of these lamebrains do.

I actually had a relative in the Civil War. He was a doctor. I looked at great grampas birth date and he was late teens or early 20s during the war. But, I guess anyone who could cut off a leg or arm in a hurry didn't have an age restriction. He was a die hard confederate, who would hit you with his cane if you didn't stand while Dixie was being played. But he died before I was born and that is history, whether national or family.

So, technically I could join the Sons of the Confederacy if I wanted. Don't know how the color of my late wife would go over there during show and tell. blank stare @ you

All it shows is that we need a few more generations to clear our collective subconscious of that aberration.

I don't get what the point is of re-enacting the Civil War, that's just stupid. And they lost, for God's sake! I think it's some sort of depraved wish to have things as they were back then. They can't stand it that the they don't have their slaves or plantations anymore. It's fair to say I have a dislike for the south.

I always saw it as a way for the South to underhandedly glorify and cling to it's old traditions, under the mask of it seeming like they're just honoring history. Like "even though we lost....we fought the good fight and are PROUD of how our ancestors lived."

I wonder if they think if they retell it, the ending might be different that time.
