Ever get a ride from someone after standing on the side of the road flagging a car down?

no, but I did pick up hitch hikers before...When I was younger and dumber and still thought that I was fairly invincible.

I take it none of them ever killed you?

Re: Anyone ever hitchhike before?
Of course I hitch hiked. All us young ppl did in the '70s.
I used to make short runs from New Orleans up to Misissippi all the time but my longest thumb ride was from San Francisco to New Orleans in 1970. Took about 4 days. Got put up for the night in LA by a guy who picked me up and slept on concrete on the side of the road another night. It helps to be young.

Re: Anyone ever hitchhike before?
On that trip from San Francisco to New Orleans I got picked up by a guy cruising the rest stops in Arizona somewhere. I had been about two days on the road and went with him. Only when we parked in a dark desert area did I realize how dangerous my situation could be. (Looked like the body dump areas of Nevada you see on CSI). But he was just wanting some young man affection and I'm still here.Tony Marino wrote:I have been offered rides from strangers (mostly guys, hmmmm) but have never accepted.

Re: Anyone ever hitchhike before?
My great uncle picked up a hitch hiker a couple years ago, and he got the crap beat out of him somehow.
We all have our suspicions based on the police report about how it went down, but my uncle is in the closet or if he's not, for some reason our whole family just thinks he is...So I didn't ask too many questions.

Re: Anyone ever hitchhike before?
Never hitchhiked but I once got a ride from a total stranger who worked at my job so I guess the situation wasn't as hazardous. This was while I was in between cars. It was late and the buses had stopped running for the night, and my usual pick up bailed on me. I stood outside and basically asked this guy who I never saw before if he was going a certain way and he was good enough to drop me off.

Could be. Maybe the kid he picked up wasn't as amenable as I was.thepossiblepolice wrote:My great uncle picked up a hitch hiker a couple years ago, and he got the crap beat out of him somehow.

After we left the desert and driving back to the rest stop I found out the guy who picked me up and did oral on me in his car was married with kids. Guess in those rural areas of the country ppl are not as out as in the big cities.

Re: Anyone ever hitchhike before?
I hitch hiked almost every weekend in the late fifties. Of course I was in US Navy uniform hitchin from San Diego to Redondo Beach where my girl lived. That was easy because I usually caught a ride with another sailor that had a car, He filled the car with sailors and we usually chipped in a bit for gas.
Coming back on Sunday nights was a bit more problematic. A lot of gays out cruising for young guys so I usually got picked up by one of them. Never a problem though, when they made their pitch, I just told them "I'm not interested, please let me off at the next corner". Eventually some sailor came along and took me the rest of the way.
I don't think I'd hitch hike now, to many predators out there. Not so bad for guys but girls are very vulnerable.
I don't often pick up anyone either but I did one evening when we lived in Tombstone, Arizona. I worked in Sierra Vista, about 18 miles away. On the way home, it was raining cats and dogs when I spotted a little sports car beside the road and as I drew near, a very shapely feminine leg popped out of the door and the lady waved me down. She had car trouble, was well out of town and was stranded. She asked if I could give her a ride to her Fathers home near Tombstone. What could I say, the lady was in distress and she was a looker!
Now, I'm an old married guy so I wasn't about to get involved in any hanky panky but the problem was her perfume. She used lots of it and it really stunk up the car and I was wondering how I was going to explain that when I got home! As we got nearer to Tombstone, she pointed to a dirt road off to the left and we turned in. I drove a good half mile off the road into the hills and was getting pretty nervous before the house came into view. Fortunately, she was above board and no harm came to either of us. When I got home, I immediately told my wife about it because I had no doubt that even I smelled of her perfume!
