To people who write fiction/papers/reports/proposals, etc. How much do you find yourself rewriting from scratch versus editing existing material? Do you prefer adapting something that already exists....or re-creating it yourself?

I don't tend to mess with other people's work other than in my head.

Re: How Much Do You Rewrite?
I'm constantly rewriting my stuff but I never rewrite the writing of other people although I might do if I were in the workplace and that was my job. I often have trouble getting my thoughts written down exactly as I want them so I'm re-arranging sentences and paragraphs until it suits me.

Re: How Much Do You Rewrite?
My trouble is I write something, leave it and don't come back for 5 years..I go on and write more and sometimes it is similar to what I wrote last year, but how the hell do I remember? It is buried in one of the 100s of spiral notebooks I have stacked in a rubbermaid tote..

Re: How Much Do You Rewrite?
I had an idea for a nudist magazine article and submitted it. Didn't get published so I put it away.
Years later, I saw something that triggered the exact idea for an article. I had completely forgotten the one I wrote and wrote another. They are almost verbatim.
(At least I can remember my creative ideas, if not the fact that I put them down on paper already.)

Re: How Much Do You Rewrite?
Completed ONE notebook. At least now it is on the computer / digital. What is amazing is that as I was entering the pieces in word, I remembered (almost all) the words and phrases I had written 13 years ago...kind of scary huh?...
