Another movie based on a novel by Stephen King. What's your opinion of Stand By Me? Has anyone read the book that it was inspired from?

This is a King story? Weird. Know about it; never saw it.

Yeah, it's based on King's novel The Body. Which always seemed odd to me, because usually films based on SK novels fall under the category of horror. SBM is a coming of age drama, and pretty much a family film.

^^^^^Family Film and R don't seem to go together often. Wink I think I heard more about it when I became obsessed with watching Twelve and Holding back a few years.

I have it on DVD but haven't watched it in a long time. I thought River Phoenix's dialogue was too sophisticated ("I wish to hell I was your dad", what early teenager talks like that?) in some scenes, but good movie anyway.

Good movie and pretty faithful to a better story. As Chris already said, it's based on The Body by King from a collection of four novellas from the book Different Seasons. One of the differences I remember is that Gordie's older brother was a bit of a prick in the story and we are told how Eyeball Chambers does get revenge on the boys. Despite his rep for the supernatural, the closest he comes to anything like that is in The Breathing Method and that's the only one that has yet to be adapted for the screen. The other two stories were Apt Pupil and Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. Maybe some of you have seen the move they made of that last one.

Red, if your reading this, I'd recommend Stand By Me over Cujo for your son in a heartbeat.
