Going back as far as you remember, who was the first person you knew who passed away? When I was in the 4th grade, a classmate had cancer and was out for most of the year....the school put on a "fun" day charity for him, charging everyone a dollar to participate to go towards his treatments....but sadly he couldn't be saved.

My uncle, my great aunts husband, died when I was ten. Though I didn't go to his funeral, that was the first time someone I knew passed away.

I guess it depends on how you define "knew." There was a great I loosely knew that passed when I was 5 or so but I guess the first person I really knew was my maternal grandmother who died when I was 7.

I was about 14 when my grandfather died. Guess that was the first but the one with more impact was a second cousin who I used to play with and died when we were in our 20s. Guess a contemporary dying has more impact.

Since I have actually been with ppl as they crossed over - some so peacefully you don't know the exact time life left them.

My maternal grandparents died around the same time as an uncle. Those were the first. But it didn't get to me as they were not close.

The first death that "shook" me was when I was in high school. And it was another student.

When I was 5, my grandfather was killed in a car accident. When I was 8 my uncle died (never found out how, but he was a thief and a drug addict). Another uncle (of sorts) died of aids when I was 10 (also a drug addict). Also, when I was 10 my next door neighbor died of cancer. When I was 17 my stepdad committed suicide. Since I've joined the military I've known several people who've died. A aquaintance of mine (co-worker) committed suicide after having some financial and marital problems. Two years ago, I was involved in the recovery crew of an F-22 crash and a T-38 crash. The T-38 pilot was a captain that my roommate was stationed with. I served on the Air Force Honor Guard for about a year and have had the unfortunate experience of attending several active duty funerals (of airmen killed in Afghanistan). So, I've seen or been around death in one form or another throughout my entire life.

Okay, this is going to sound really stupid, but the first death that had an emotional effect on me was Kurt Cobain. I was 14 and SO into Nirvana. I remember my dad trying to talk to me and screaming at him while crying "Kurt's dead, we're all going to die and there's nothing we can do about it!" blushing

The first person that I actually knew who died, died when I was also 14. He was a friend, but not a close friend and he was hit by a car while skateboarding, I was sad. When I went to view his body though, I suddenly got the giggles and couldn't hold it in. I was nervous I think, and that was my reaction.

I first person I was close to who died, died when I was 16. He and I sang jazz together from the time we were 13, planned to marry each other if we were both still single at 35, and had co-birthday parties. He was an Egyptian immigrant who lived in New York before he moved near me and he taught me some Egyptian and constantly made fun of me. He was speeding too fast on a curvy road and rolled his car.

I always thought it was ironic that his traditional Egyptian parents wouldn't let him ride in a car with me driving, because I was a cautious driver and he wasn't.
