So, has anyone taken the plunge and gotten one? I thought long and hard about it two weeks ago on a shopping trip with a friend (she got one) but I think other tablets, better priced, are the way to go for me.

Every now and then I think about it, but really, at this point, it's a luxury that I'm just not sure I need. I'm tempted every now and then but I really don't know how much it would add to my life at this point.

I have one. I never bought the first version. I'm not ashamed to say that I love it. It's just light and easy to carry and better than using my phone when I want to go on the internet when I'm not home.

My issue is that my netbook was half the price and does 8x as much. Aside from the fact that it's a full computer rather than a hobble, shiny gizmo, it's completely customizable (unlike anything running iOS). It runs both Mac OS X and Windows 7. And it's actually smaller than an iPad.

What kind of netbook did you get, (Oh!) Rob Petrie? My main interest in the ipad was the size - easily portable - far more so than my laptop, but I don't think I like the ipad's keyboard, or lack there-of.

There are two ways to go. The 3G ones are more expensive, and require a plan. But all iPads have wifi, (even the 3G capable ones) so no matter, the model, you would get free wifi if you were in a free wifi area.

Right. I thought it was something like that. Now I see a drawback to them because you're not going to get free Wi-fi or even a good Wi-Fi signal everywhere so it's like you may as well purchase a plan.

I have the HP Mini 110, but it's now an outdated model. I'd recommend going with one of the newer Eee PCs and then upgrading it to Windows 7 Ultimate (rather than Windows 7 Starter).

Yea and no. There are two versions. I bought the one with Wi-Fi and 3G and it's needs a plan. Mine is with Verizon and it's 35 dollars a month. The other version has Wi-Fi and no plan is needed. You just need Wi-Fi hot spots in order to connect to the internet.
