    Win Win Empty Win Win

Another example of how Paul Giamatti can elevate a flawed character and the film, as well. This off-beat black comedy is funny and sincere at the right moments. The film grows on you.

Mike is a lawyer (Giamatti) who's practice is in need of a big payday...as bills are piling up.... comes across a wealthy man (Burt Young) who has early stages of dementia, and a daughter missing for some 20 years. Mike convinces the court to make him the guardian for $1,500 per month. This seems to work even better when the man's grandson shows up and needs a place to live. Mike also happens to coach the local high school wrestling team and the grandson just happens to be an all-state wrestler from Ohio. We have what looks like a win win situation. That is, until the boys mother (Melanie Lynskey) fresh out of rehap...and smelling her own payday....shows up.

Believe me it all works out. We are dealing with a terrific cast, including Amy Ryan as Mike's wife and Bobby Cannavale as Mike's goofball best friend. And writer/director Tom McCarthy who's previous films were "The Station Agent" and "The Visitor", both exceptional films.

    B+
