Robbie's thread on Target brought this to mind. Have you ever been in a situation where you had to make a choice between sacrificing a principle of yours or doing something that was to your benefit? For example, if you were gay or sympathetic to gay rights and you won a scholarship from Target and then found out they made that donation, would you still accept the scholarship even if refusing it meant a major hurdle in fulfilling your dream of going to college? Same if the organization that was benefiting you supported pro choice and you thought abortion was a horrible crime. Where would you draw the line?

When I was in college I was always receiving offers and applications for scholarships from Hispanic centered organizations. I do have pride in my heritage but I don't have excessive pride and I disagree with most of the views of Hispanic centered organizations. So during college I never applied for scholarships from those organizations and turned down internships and conference invitations from those organizations.

Sometimes I think you have to go with what's practical. Take for instance, Elton John performed at Rush Limbaugh's wedding. Limbaugh, who is known for not having that compliant an attitude when it comes to matters of gay acceptance, and then took what he was paid and donated it to a gay-based charity. When you're stuck between a rock in a hard place, if you have to acquiesce to the side you'd normally not adhere to, then there's always a way to even the hand afterwards.
