No. In my own definition, porn has to be visual. People have to be actually doing it, and in writing and reading material, that is n/a.

Written stuff is food for the imagination though!

Pornography is defined as sexually explicit pictures, WRITING, or other material whose primary purpose is to cause sexual arousal. So yes you could call it that.

Okay then a sub question. If by majority vote, romance novels are porn, does that mean we shouldn't read them?

Well on another hand the thing about porn movies is it's 'real', it's two or however many people actually going at it in front of a camera, trashy novels are just conjured up out of the authors' perverted minds, so there is a bit of a difference. Not that I think the novels are any improvement, I'd certainly never read them.

Pornography is in the eye of the beholder. I had to ask my wife's opinion because that Romance novels are one of the many genres she reads. Her eyes said "no". While we're at it, what constitutes "trashy"?

Harlequin for one I think, and that's a particularly large genre.

"Trashy" is the same as 'porn'. I can't describe it but I know it when I see it.

Trashy can be fun. Not just novels, but movies. Hasn't anyone had a mood where they didn't want to watch a 'fine' movie, they just wanted something from Lifetime, SyFy channel, or some obscure cable channel showing some movie you never heard of? I have.

Even though the definition Supernova gave defines the writing as porn, I would not classify erotic literature as porn. Although many are in the porn industry willingly, there are also many who are NOT there willingly. Literature generally does not victimize anyone.

Agree Tony! That is why they are called "trashy novel" Sure they may have romantic scenes but no where near porn. If you have read any porn magazines, you would understand what I mean.

Not into "romance novels" (tried once years ago, thought they were silly) but definitely into erotica & no, don't consider it to be porn at all.

I've read some books that described x-rated sex scenes....but I think those are a different "genre". I imagine that the typical "romance" novel is probably more akin to those softcore erotica films that run late at night on Cinemax than those Jake Steed and Midori flicks.

Maybe not an extreme equivalent, but I think women have historically enjoyed "trashy romance novels" as much as men enjoy their porn.

Pump women with it and they will behave just like men. (and maybe grow a beard, IDK)

I don't read romance novels, trashy or otherwise so I wouldn't know how close it comes to porn.

But I do write porn and I suppose the difference is that the novels tell of desires, embraces, kisses and maybe lightly laying with each other, whereas I describe all the close-ups of groping, sniffing, licking, sucking and fucking.

I don't think testosterone has much to do with the woman's side of this comparison.

Both sexes secrete "male" and "female" hormones. Testosterone is the hormone that is responsible for libido in both sexes.
