The term 'Prude' is usually used in a negative stance, but do you think that it is bad to be a prude?

If people want to be a prude I'm not gonna stop them as long as they're not trying to push their prudishness on everyone else.

I wouldn't recommend it in general but I do believe a little prudishness could come in handy.

Re: Is 'prudishness' a bad thing?
I can understand a little modesty but some ppl are waaay too body & sex negative and unrealistic toward the natural human condition.
I am not such an exception - there were many in my gen who dropped all that contrived modesty and it is quite freeing.

A total prude, to the point where people roll their eyes when your name is mentioned, that is probably bad. JK.
I am always being called a prude, because I think the women in the company I work for dress like hookers.
But I think everyone should do anything they want, I just wish I didn't have to know about it.

Agreed. It's the unrealistic POV that always gets me.

Thanx. I think Munch would have appreciated it, especially since The Kiss (1897) was censored. During WWII Adolf Hitler (a typical, controlling prude) censored Munch along with Matisse, Gauguin and a lot of other 'decadent' artists.CeCe wrote:Shale wrote:

One of those decadent French artists, Paul Chabas did a very beautiful painting in 1912 called September Morn.
Yep, censored first by the Mayor of Chicago and later attacked by our pre-iminent prude Anthony Comstock, who like Hitler had the power to force his prudery onto others.
OH, did we mention an UNREALISTIC POV?

Re: Is 'prudishness' a bad thing?
Ok I am not satisfied with the way I explained my feelings. In one way I am not a prude, in that I don't mind what anyone does with their life, as long as it involves consenting adult humans. Anything. I don't have to know about it, I don't have to approve it, just do it, if it makes you happy, do it.
The way I am a prude, is the idea of posing naked for pictures in magazines. I think it is an unwise thing, because you might not be feeling so free someday, and come to regret it. I think about myself doing it, and I would be so uncomfortable with random people seeing me naked, I think I would pass out. So it is my own feeling of repression and embarrassment. But if anyone else wants to do it, they should go right ahead.
I don't know if this clears anything up, but yes I am a prude.

Re: Is 'prudishness' a bad thing?
A certain degree of modesty is fine, even necessary in my view but the dictionary defines "prude" as someone who is excessively proper or modest in speech, conduct, dress, etc. Under those terms then, yes, I don't think it is anything "devoutly to be wished." Same goes for the extremes in the other direction.

One example (for me) would be excessive profanity. I know I'm guilty of it at times in informal social settings (such as here) but I'd rather not have the teller at the bank ask me if I want my change in fucking 10's or 20's or the cashier ask if I want fucking paper or plastic.

Depends on what it is. Being a prude may only be bad if you're totally detached from reality. You don't have to be a fucking open book to not be declared a prude. There is a balance with everything.

Not per se, but don't ruin everyone's time because you're uptight about taking off your mittens. Go hang out with other prudes and talk about church, cakes and coupons with them.
