Do you think it's bad parenting when parents allow their kids to curse in front of them? I could NEVER imagine doing such a thing or allowing it if I had any kids, but it seems nowadays I'm seeing teenagers casually curse in front of their parents with words like "damn", "hell", "bitch". etc.

I can not stand that. It is a respect thing. My parents never heard me swear.

I can't imagine such a thing either; my daughter would never get away with cursing in front of me. A few years ago I had to get on her for saying 'dang' with a little too much force.

Re: Parents who let their kids curse
when i was a teen (16 or older) i used to "casually" curse in front of my mom, nothing like "fuck you", but if i was talkin to her and describing a bad situation, then i would use curse words. like ma, "my boss was being an asshole/bitch today" somethin along those lines.
younger kids tho? no, its not cool

I personally....not when they're little but when they're about 10 or so, I could see teaching them that in private it's okay but you do NOT talk that way in public or to other people.

Yep, cursing in front of your parents in not a good look. Have some respect. I never cursed in front of my parents when I was younger......I was a damn grown woman before I even said the words "hell", "damn" or "shit" in front of them. The hardcore stuff I still won't say in front of them.

Re: Parents who let their kids curse
No, I think kids should learn some decorum at a young age. Cursing is a hard habit to break and a lot of workplaces don't tolerate vulgar language so it is best to give the kid proper training.
The last time my mother beat me was for cursing. I was 16 at the time.
Oh, and I was a block away when she heard me.
I was up a tree and my stepbro was shaking the branch. Looking at a 15 foot drop I yelled "GODDAMNIT BUDDY STOP" Then I heard mom yelling at me and she pounded on my back all the way to the house.

It shows a flagrant lack of discipline and respect. I'm 39 and still don't cuss in front of my parents. Any parent who lets their child drop 4-letter words in their presence are laxed and lapsed authority figures IYAM (and especially if they really are a child).

Re: Parents who let their kids curse
I would say that allowing minors to curse is a very bad idea. The kid will probably turn into the little fucker (you're right Shale - it is a tough habit to beak) who lives next to Tony. My daughter didn't curse in front of us until she was past 20. I'm not sure at what age before that I would have washed her mouth out with soap. I don't remember at what age I demonstrated my mastery of profanity to either of my parents. My father has the Lenny Bruce philosophy, that fucking someone is something pleasant so if you want to say something mean, you should say "un-fuck you". So whenever I say to him, "Fuck you, Dad", he says back to me, "Thank you for thinking kindly of me son."

The only time I ever cursed in front of my momma was when I was about 11. I dropped something and in the heat of the moment I said "Oh shit!" We were both shocked at my saying it.

Re: Parents who let their kids curse
Odd man out here. I don't see how it's disrespectful to use so-called foul language in front of someone who isn't offended by that language. I swore in front of my parents. I was taught that certain words offend certain people, and that I shouldn't use them lightly. I was also taught that swearing AT someone is not okay. I guess I've raised my kids the same way.
Amazingly enough, they know not to drop F-bombs in public or at a job, despite swearing with their friends and in the home. I guess my teenagers might be smarter than most. (where's the tongue-in-cheek smiley?) I don't feel in the least disrespected when my kid says "I stubbed my fucking toe!" How is that disrespectful towards anyone? How is it more disrespectful at age 15 than it is at 23? Sounds awfully arbitrary, to me.
I do think that beating a child for any reason is extremely disrespectful.

Re: Parents who let their kids curse
Nah you're not gonna cuss in front of me like I'm one of your peers. My kids are 11 and I figure they (my son anyway) say their bad words when no adult is around to punish them....but they know better than to do it in front of me, or any authority figure. To this day it's still rare that I say any "bad words" in front of my parents and when I do, they give me the same "you know better/watch your mouth" look that they would have when I was a kid.

Re: Parents who let their kids curse
I think it's bad manners and disrespectful of young children to curse anytime, let alone in front of their parents, but when they get to be in their mid-teens and on, I feel they can pretty much say what they want and if Mom and Pop don't like it, that's just too damn bad.
When I was little and said a bad word, my Mom would wash my mouth out with soap and I rarely said any curse words, until I was 14 or so, then I started cursing like a sailor. Now, as an adult, I cuss in front of my Mom and she does the same in front of me. One word I never say, though, in front of her is the f-bomb, she hates that word.
