Which decade do you think produced the best horror films? I say the 1960s, definitely. Something about the whole psychedelic vibe of the decade that made the supernatural and horror films of that decade cheesy, but memorable.

The 60s definitely had some good ones, Psycho, Night of the Living Dead, etc., but I'm going to say the 50s, some of those movies were just fantastic, and you can attribute the more sci/fi-ish storylines to the red scare or not, but they worked, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Blob, Invaders from Mars, House on Haunted Hill, The Bat, Daughter of Horror, The Thing from Another World, Tarantula, Them!, The Mad Magician, House of Wax (I haven't seen it but I hear it's good), The Fly, good decade for movies.

I am going to say the 30's, and the 50's. Horror films had something to say in those decades. It wasn't just blood, attacks, and death and dismemberment.

It was the deep down fear of something inside yourself that was something to be afraid of. Or someone else. Not a knife, but an emotion. Or an event. Those movies were symbolic, and allegories, but they were not about just psychopaths and murderers. They were subtle.

Or Curse of the Demon, The Crawling Eye, Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, Invaders From Mars and Rodan.

All decades have produced classics but I'll give the nod to the 50s too.

Hmm...it's hard to pinpoint which decade was "the best," as every decade has had some awesome horror flicks, just as every decade has had a ton of stinkers.

60's - Psycho, Night of the Living Dead, Repulsion, Rosemary's Baby
70's - Black Christmas, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Exorcist, Halloween, Alien
80's - Nightmare on Elm Street, Spoorloos (The Vanishing)
90's - Silence of the Lambs, Scream, The Blair Witch Project

I don't count the 00's or the 2010's because most of it has been filled with storyless torture-porn and needless remakes of films that really defined the genre, especially the slasher genre. I do have to tip the hat to The Descent and Paranormal Activity - though a very average (and slightly boring) film, the after-affect of fear and unease it creates for the viewer at home is sheer brilliance.

Thinking about it, I'm gonna have to say it's a toss-up between the 60's and the 70's for me. It was less about gore and violence and more about suspense and tension and pure, genuine shock, topped-off with strong and relevant (at the time, at least) social commentaries.

The 1967 Night of the Living Dead is a great horror film. It looks like it cost about $500 to make, but that doesn't matter.

You don't feel like you are watching a movie about a bunch of people inside a house with zombies outside.

You feel like YOU are IN a house with zombies outside!

Here's something creepy, it was released yesterday that the woman who was the star in that movie, was found in her home, mummified, apparently she'd died a year before and was only recently found, and that was only because her neighbor noticed the mail was piling up and getting old.
