What's your opinion of after school, or Saturday, detention for kids? Do you think it works as a suitable punishment, or is it largely a waste of time? When you were in school, how often were you sentenced to it?

Re: School detention
I've got no idea if it works on kids or not, some of them it probably would but then there are others who get it repeatedly so they're obviously not learning anything from it, just like everything else.

Re: School detention
When I was in school it was usually the same kids getting detention over and over so I say its got flaws.

There should be repercussions to wrong doings, otherwise they will never stop doing what they do and it will just get worse. Afternoon detention may not strike the fear of God into them but it's inconvenient just the same.

IDK. I never got detention. I went to school to learn, not to fuck around.

Re: School detention
It is simply one option that may work on some and not on others. Also, others may not like it so they may learn from others experience, a deterrent I suppose.

It might work on Brian Johnson but it's useless on John Bender.

Re: School detention
I don't think it hurts. I've only done detention once, maybe twice in my life and it was in-house. Having to stay at school for some bullshit or going to school on Saturday did not appeal to me.

Re: School detention
I don't think there's anything wrong with it. I think it can work for some kids - kids who want to learn from their mistakes, but, of course, there are some kids who are there repeatedly and I say if they want to waste their time over and over again, let them - there needs to be discipline and any kind of discpline is not guaranteed to work.
When I was in school I was only in detention a handful of times, three of those times being in third grade for not doing my homework - and boy did it work! I really worked hard after that.

I don't think it makes a huge difference, and it doesn't much scare the more apathetic kids....but the average kid would rather go home at 2:30, instead of having to spend another hour+ there....so it probably does work to some degree.

I remember getting it a lot in my freshman and junior years....in my sophomore and senior years, not so much.
