Does it bother you when (stereotypically) conservative pundits use the notion that children may be corrupted to argue against a hotbed public issue/moral debate, or do you think it's a legitimate concern?

Oh they do it all the time. It's usually the right wing wackos. We need to ban abortion to "protect the children". We need to "save" marriage to "protect the children". We need to pass strict decency laws to "protect the children". We need to tell you what you can or cannot eat not only for your own good but to...well you get it. And it is important to safeguard within reasonable limits. But it's generally a conservative ploy to push their own beliefs on everyone else, generally based in religion.
Check out some of the right wing christian conservative forums...if you dare.

Seriously? The "children" defense has long been the moral majority's favorite tactic. It's emotional blackmail to use the threat of children being defiled by a counter culture as a tool to strike hysteria in the minds of people to get them to rally against it.

Re: 'Think of the children'
There's another current thread about a bare-breasted statue in Utah and here are the prude's arguments for its removal.Supernova wrote:I actually have never heard anybody make that argument for anything.
It’s a simple statue of a woman holding a plate. A golden cloth is draped around her waist, leaving the rest of her body bare.
The half-nude statue is in the yard of an Ogden, Utah neighborhood filled with children, many whose parents think the statue is inappropriate. That’s why they complained to the city, asking that the statue be removed.
North Ogden City Manager Ed Dickie says the residents approached the North Ogden City Council to say the statue doesn’t belong in a neighborhood with many elementary school-age children passing by the statue every day.
... neighbors continue to be outraged, one even anonymously called a local newspaper, the StandardExaminer to complain.
“Nothing is happening. He’s not doing anything about it,” the woman told the newspaper. “It’s lewd and there’s so many little children under eight.”

No, of course it is not a legitimate concern. The ppl using that scare tactic are either just being dishonest or they are honestly ignorant of world reality.
Take nudity, which they always say is harmful for children to see without ever considering the healthy children who live in nude cultures whether tropical or naturist.

Re: 'Think of the children'
"Think of the children". On a sinking ship, sure. On the one hand you have parents allowing their kids to stuff themselves while they sit on their butts playing murder simulation video games to the point where they can appear on Georgia PSA billboards and on the other hand you have parents covering their precious darling's eyes so they don't see a pair of marble breasts. And not very big ones at that. T.O.T.C. is just the catch phrase of intellectually dishonest adults who will stoop to anything to get their way. Think of YOUR children. Leave mine alone.

Doesn't bother me too much. They have to blame their ridiculousness on something right?

Liberals do it and other arguments like it all the time too.
And yeah, by definition we need to ban abortion to protect the children. I guess we're going to complain that we need to ban child abuse and child pornography to "protect the children" next?
Liberals only are against it when it's used against one of their precious issues. Left wingers are no better.
I say use appropriate arguments and protecting children often is appropriate, if not always the best. I have more problems with other arguments that liberals typically use.
