On Monday, the Texas Senate approved a bill that, if passed, would allow those with concealed handgun licenses to carry weapons in public college buildings and classrooms.

Supporters of the controversial legislation, which now heads to the state's House for a vote, say carrying guns on campus is a self-defense measure, one that could allow students to fight back in school shootings like those at Virginia Tech in 2007 and Northern Illinois University in 2008. Those against the bill, including administrators at the University of Texas system, worry the law could lead to more campus crime and suicides.

According to the AP, guns on campus bills have been rejected in at least 23 states since 2007. Last month, a similar bill passed in Arizona, but Gov. Jan Brewer used her veto power to stop it from becoming a law. She said while she generally supports allowing people to carry their weapons in a wider range of places, the legislation was poorly written.

But gun-control advocates aren't likely to see a similar result with Texas Gov. Rick Perry if the bill clears the House and heads to his desk for a signature. The gun-loving governor, who has voiced support for the bill, once famously shot a coyote with a laser-sighted pistol while he was jogging with his dog.

In Texas they allow kids to take guns to school and make women get sonograms before they get abortions. Remind me to never go there!

Oh good idea, that's what we need, more weapons on college campuses - why didn't I think of that?

Kids? They are not kids. They are adults so as such they should be allowed to carry a gun for self defensse if they want to.

Now, I do not know the exact writing of the law. I am not sure if the bill will ALLOW carrying guns into a college campus. If this is the case I think the campus still has the option of allowing or not.

In other words I am allow to do something, that does not mean I have to do that.

The right to bear arms is a matter of freedom and as such those adult (not kids) students should be allowed to carry a gun for their protection.

Apparently it does because in the article it mentions the students at VA Tech not being able to defend themselves. Now they're not saying give everybody a gun, they're saying ones with licenses ALREADY, which means people who have passed background checks, and yes sometimes a few nuts slip through those cracks but if you ban guns ONLY the nuts will have them, so it's better this way. Normal, law abiding citizens are NOT going to go psycho and shoot everybody JUST because they CAN conceal their guns when they go to class; the only ones who ARE going to do that are the ones who have no regard for the law in the first place. So I really don't see how this is a problem.

It's a safe bet that people like the VA Tech gunman KNEW the other students would legally have to be unarmed, hence sitting ducks, if the nutsos KNOW the other students are packing and could shoot him first, maybe they'll think twice before they try to blow everyone away, or maybe somebody else can shoot him first before we have a 30+ body count.

Except the people in question ALREADY are allowed to conceal and carry, so how is them doing it on campus going to be any different?

So the answer is just leave it so only the criminals can illegally bring guns to school and everybody else can just have a bulls eye on their back?

LOL. Listen to yourself. Are school shootings a regular occurrence where you live or something? Smaller incidents that can pop off would be a MUCH bigger and more regular occurrence than some nut coming in with an illegal weapon and performing a mass murder. That is NOT a reason to justify anyone (gun license or not) to carry on a SCHOOL CAMPUS. You can't carry in a department store. You can't carry at a movie theater. So most people who do have gun licenses do not carry when they're out in public. You have a bulls eye on your back every time you step out of the house and being allowed to carry is not going to prevent that. Criminals who obtain illegal guns is a GUN CONTROL issue. It's a legal issue. The person at VA Tech should not have been able to get a AK-47 in the first place. The answer to that is not to allow people to carry a damn handgun to school.

Except he wasn't allowed to and he did anyway, and from that one we had the highest body count in a school shooting in the country's history.


Now, what about teachers? Teachers are a lot older than the students, presumably more responsible (ha ha), should they be allowed to carry on campus or are even the teachers just going to run around the building shooting everyone?

This is a problem waiting to happen. But then again this is Texas right? They probably take them things to church too.
