The Bat (1926) Empty The Bat (1926)

Post by Supernova Sun May 22, 2011 2:09 pm

Okay, so I wanted to do a thread about my favorite horror/mystery movie, The Bat, but given that there are three versions of this movie, I thought I'd give each of them a separate post because there's much to be discussed about all of them and I think this way it would help avoid confusion.

So I'm starting with the original from 1926 based on Mary Roberts Rinehart's novel of the same name from the same year. A lot of people know this but some still don't, that this movie was one of the key inspirations for Bob Kane to create Batman, of course a major difference is here the Bat is the villain, but you do see a lot of similarities in it. And we're fortunate that instead of having to put it up in 10 parts, the entire movie was available on one video on Youtube, and here it is:

One thing that people NEVER point out in the similarity to this and Batman is that at one point in the movie, when the house is dark, a signal of the Bat comes in through the window, a round light on the wall with apparently a bat in the center of it...somehow nobody draws a connection to this and the Bat light used in the comics to summon Batman. Go figure.
