Henry Fonda and Joanne Woodward are homesteaders passing through Laredo, TX in 1896 on the day of the annual high stakes poker game between six rich and powerful men. Fonda is a former gambler who gets sucked into the game and takes ill with all his family's savings on the table leaving his wife to play out the hand. It's basically a comedy. Jason Robards is one of the other gamblers and Burgess Meredith is the town doctor.
