September of last year while visiting St. Charles, I drove back to the neighborhood where I grew up in St. Ann. Also went to Ritenour High School and got some pics of the main bldg.
Was surprised at the lack of security in this midwestern town. Drove on without a security gate just as it was in the '60s. Walked into the main entrance with no security checkpoint or metal detector to ask if there would be any prob with me taking pics and was standing in a hallway crammed with students while looking for the office.
I know the demographic of the neighborhood and my high school has changed in the last half-century, mostly ppl of color now.

Last time I was inside there? I drove past there recently, but the last time I was inside was prob. about 5 and a half years ago. I was picking up a transcript.

last time i was inside the high school went to, was the day i dropped out.. never had a reason to go back..that was 13 years ago

Never even drove by it for as long as I was there. When I left I haven't even been back to that town except for once that I remember.

Do I detect a bit of hostility toward Alma Maters in these responses?
I actually think I enjoyed my high school years. It was overall fun learning and doing new things. I didn't enjoy math but did alright in Algebra, chemistry, basic science and I aced Biology. Loved art class and social studies actually gave us kids a forum to express our ideas on the state of the world.
I never got into sports, but my budding dissidence was hatched at high school, protesting the pledge of allegiance and quite defiantly rebelling against the mainstream religions that were considered sacrosanct.
It was an exciting way to spend my adolescence and it was with some nostalgia that I returned to look at the now old brick bldg.

A year after graduating, I went back to return part of the uniform to the band teacher that I had forgot to give back at the time. I walked in and this cold shudder came over my body....it was too much like no time had passed. Had to get back out of there as soon as possible.
